Took my daughter out last week to our ranch to try and shoot her first deer. She is 10 years old this year and figured it was time since we have had her shooting for a few years now. We got to the blind a little late and started getting settled when I saw that a mesquite was blocking one of the windows. I decided to get out and lop some limbs off and was about 30 seconds in to it when I look over and at 40 yds was a huge ten. Of course at that moment the loppers decided to get stuck in the tree so I just left them up there and climbed in to the blind to get ready for the shot (yes, I was going to shoot it since it was one of the largest I've seen on the ranch) when my daughter looked at me and said "PLEASE DADDY let me shoot it". I gave in and started getting her ready for the shot when he decided to turn and walk straight away from us. We were both shaking waiting for him to turn but he wandered into the brush and disappeared. We were both pumped and disappointed but looked forward to the rest of the hunt. I climbed out to get the dang loppers stuck in the tree and then got settled in. We had some pictures of a couple cull bucks that I was hoping would show for her. We watched a few does come out and feed down a road for awhile when another buck decided to show (pictured). He came out at 50 yds and we talked about the shot while waiting for the broadside neck shot. He then did the same thing as the other buck and walked straight away from us. We thought it was game over and then he stopped at 125 yds broadside. We both started shaking again and she tells me "I can't hold it on the neck daddy". I make the decision for a shoulder shot and she aims on it. I whisper the infamous words into her ear "ok, squeeze the tr.......BANG!" I see him hump up and he trots off. I couldn't really tell where the hit was but she was confident. We both were ecstatic but I still had a bad feeling since it kind of just trotted off. The does came back out and fed again and I told her we would let them leave before we went looking for blood. Ten minutes go by and the does feed off into the brush and not 20 seconds after that, you know who limps back into the middle of the road. Unbelievably, he hobbles back out into the road, does two circles, and lays down to die right in the middle of the road. I couldn't believe it. I made her hold a bead on him until it look like he had expired. We finally got out and walked down to her first deer. What a memory for me and her I'm sure. Hugs and tears were plentiful. Many a picture were taken and texts sent. What a day to remember. For all the parents who get their kids outdoors, Kudos! Sorry for the long post but it's just from one proud father. One cool thing is that I have two younger kids and I hopefully get to do it two more times.

are you kidding me? what a story. Where was the deer hit? To be gone that long and come back to the road and die I'd have to guess she clipped the liver or something else vital, and he just bled out internally, but that is just crazy. Congrats to you both, I can't wait til me and my daughter have that day!

My first deer was a little spike, she smoked me big time. The shot exploded the liver. No meat or gut got hit thank goodness, especially since I had to cape and dress it.

It takes a big man to pass up the biggest deer for their kid to shoot. A lot of people never realize it feels a lot better to watch the excitment in the kids face and reaction than their own.
