Any Knowledge with Carp Fishing/Pay Lake Tournaments? Hello! I own a catfish farm in South Georgia. I was wondering if anyone had experience with a carp fishing lake, or carp fishing tourney, with a "tagged fish" bonus prize? I've heard rumors about other farms doing a weekly tournament for carp and would like to learn more about it!

Actually, I've done a lot of carp fishing. My grandfather used to manage a pay lake in the late 1950s and early 1960.

We always used either cottonseed cakes or Wheaties dough bait.

We always ate what we caught. You have to get rid of all of the blood line, as it goes from fishy to liver along the lateral line.

We were poor enough we would have eaten the plank and had the carp for dessert. At our house, oleo was the high priced spread. We always kept a rat trap baited with a walnut in the back yard. Squirrel was a favorite.

If you have catsup sandwiches for a few days, carp can go on the menu. Mmmmm, carp. (channeling Homer)

When we were first married, we went bowfishing for carp. We got so much carp we pressure canned it. That was just wrong, don't go there.

I watched them making Gar balls on some show the other day. We might have drawn the line there.

I was a starving college kid once upon a time and would eat what I caught. Hardheads taste like fried dirt. If I didn't catch anything, I would eat the bait. Good times.

I've heard people eat, just not this one.

Had a mexican guy working for me that said he made ceviche with it also, not going to try that either.

They have carp tourney's in Lake Austin on occasion. Some guy won $50,000 a year or two back, 25k for winning the tournament & 25K cause it was the state record.

Saw a guy doing a little prefishing for that tournament, had some fancy equipment just to catch carp.

A neighbor that makes our annual batch of venison tamales also uses carp for ceviche.

My grandfather used to tell how they would use copper wire hoops to snare carp. They would cook them in a pressure cooker to soften the bones, then grind and form them into fish patties for FRYING. IMS...you out there? Very Happy

We as a people and especially a nation of plenty are so spoiled. We decide on WHAT to eat, not WHETHER we will eat at all. I can imagine being hungry enough to fight over a Hardhead, if it meant the difference of whether my kids ate or not. That time may come again.

Carp fishing in huge in Europe. My fater-in-law will eat every single part of a fish, but his stout Russian blood won't tolerate carp. We have caught them while going after other fish. When we give them to those fishing around us, they smile and act as if they had just won the lottery! In France you will see fishermen waiting with special rods, holders, and electronic bite detectors just to catch them. In Germany they have a Carp Street (Deutsches Carpf Strasse) that runs from the Czech border in Bavaria northwest towards the French border. The mascot for the city of Kaiserslautern (Kaisers = kings, Lautern = the name of the local stream) is the carp! It is displayed on the city's coat of arms.

I glad we have never had famine or wars that caused us to have to eat one here! yuck!

Yep, I was stationed there...
