anyone ever fish the spillway at lake texana for whites or stripers? I have to work up around there later in the week and was thinking about taking a rod and casting a few times during lunch. can you drive or walk up to somewhere near the discharge?

You can park right next to the discharge. txfishing.com has a bank fishing section and there is a thread titled Denison Dam. You can weed through the bs and find out what they are hitting on.
Good Luck. _________________

Look up COE website to make sure they are discharging. They like to hold back the water on holiday weekends. Sometimes there is only a trickle through those big boulders.
Heavy duty rigs with white plastic grubs are used for the striped bass.

porfetus is talking about Lake Texana.
ratherbefishing is talking about Lake Texoma.
Not much of a difference in the spelling, but these are two very different lakes. |

I've fished there a few times, but not recently. LNRA closes and locks the fishing access gate if they're discharging through the main gates of the dam. There is public access to bank fishing below the dam on the south bank, but not if the floodgates are open. Salinity maintenance releases are made through a smaller channel on the north side of the river channel that isn't accessible to the public. There are booms across the river downstream from the dam to prevent access by boat. _________________ If at first you don't succeed, neither have I. |

thanks BWana, how did you do fishing there, and what were you trying to catch? even seemingly old information would be helpful.

This time of year probably blue and channel cats on frozen shrimp. The water is brackish up to the dam and I imagine during colder months the reds move up from Lavaca Bay. I used to take my daughter fishing there when she was a little girl. She's 28 now, so like I said, it's been a while. _________________ If at first you don't succeed, neither have I. |
