My close friend Jason and his new squeeze made a visit to the coast from west Texas Friday and Saturday. Being the good host and having spent a couple of birthdays fishing with Jason, it was good to have him back down our way.
We headed out late Friday morning due to Jason and Jeanelle collecting fishing licenses and Dramamine (I told her ULM isn't the gulf, but she wanted some anyway)
We headed out with 100 live shrimp and started out on a long drift from Just north of Pita to the third windmill. Medium northeast wind allowed us to work the entire water column, but we only managed a few dink trout. Jason lost his first one (looked like a nice spec) when he tried to hand off his rod to jen, but she wanted to catch her own fish and told him to bring it in himself. I like her already.
With little success, and wind from three different directions, we headed to Laguna Reef for Mahi and shrimp. Jason reloaded the cooler with frosty adult beverages, and we headed for Emmord's Hole.
The winds (now SE) had picked up, so we anchored in 5ft and worked a grass line we couldn't see, but I know is there.
Just when I gave the "five minutes and we move call", we picked up a chunky sand trout. Then another. Then another. They didn't give much fight, but they were eatin size, and I remembered how good they tasted as a kid, so in the live well they went.
Here is a pic of Jen with her first ULM fish
The next fish was a nice 24" black drum from Jason:
Not to be outdone, Jeanelle brings in this 29" drum. On a 2500 series spinning reel, by herself, her own fish. Male egos deflated
In the meantime, I managed a sandy and a whiting. At least I'm eating. If you put them on fish you're a good host right?
Now Jason's reel goes off and he can't turn the fish. My Symetre 4000 is screaming and ARS rod is bent, and he can't turn the fish.
About 125 yards of red Powerpro is heading towards the King Ranch shoreline, so I tell Jason to tighten the drag and we'll either turn him or save the rest of the spool. Rocky told me the braid would hold, but I just got these re-spooled, and they were't cheap.
Jason managed to turn the big ugly and after a few runs under the boat, we managed to land this 40+ inch drum:
The 27+ pounder was released to fight another day. Jason also broke the size record for my boat, beating my 37", 16 lb red from last fall:
Oh, the host managed a nice anit-climactic keeper too:
Back to the house for fish and boat cleaning and back to Laguna Reef for another scrumptious seafood dinner. A special thanks to Shawn for making sure we got fed.

Feels good to put friends on fish, doesn't it ? _________________ I don't run 'cause it makes me tired. I don't lift weights 'cause they're heavy. -Charles Barkley |
