Hello all-

New in town (military) and am new to the saltwater fishing scene. I'm looking for any info I can get on where and how to catch fish around Corpus. I have a 3 and a 5 year old, so I'm looking for places that would be easy for my little guys to access. Also need to know what kind of gear I'll be needing, type of rig and bait . . .etc. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the board. For starters, read the section on this page about Best Wading and Kayak fishing Spots, it has some good starter info on what you need to start wading around. Also, the post at the top of the message board about fishing with artificials is very helpful. As far as the best spots, take a drive and do some exploring. The best spots I have found here in my 2 years down here havent been ones people show me, but rather ones I stumble upon myself. In between getting skunked a few times, you may happen upon some sweet honey holes. Good luck!

I have heard good things about those piers under the JFK bridge. How do guys fish there? Off the bottom or under a float? What type of lure or jig work best for trout and Red?

Marker 37 pier is the more family friendly, having railing to keep young-uns from falling in. Fish on bottom with dead shrimp or cut mullet, with a double dropl eader and 3 or 4 oz of weight. This pier is great for specks at night and they come through in waves normally. There will be no bite, the a big school moves in and anything you throw at them they will hit. None of the piers are great for producing trout during the day. However I did watch a guy pull in very fat 28" inch speck from the end of market 37 using dead shrimp once. So you never know.

when mine were little and we would come to corpus we always took them to bob hall pier to fish. i fel safer on the pier with them than wade fishing as i was afraid of drop offs in water plus stingrays and jelly fish as they got older then we did the surf fishing. as far as what to use we learned by watching those around us and by asking them too. there is always someone around to share info with. last time we were at bob hall last yr i let a young girl reel in a black drum i had caught. she had been trying all day to catch one

The pier at marker 37 is good, but a three and five year old will be a little to manage. Try one at a time til (they) you get the hang. I started with my little one at three and with her little Dora pole (she's six and has a nice Shimano 1000 spinner). The kids poles have a handle that floats (good for when they "cast it" into the water). If you take them out, let them pick their pole, it should keep their interest. The five year old should be able to practice casting. Put a bucket in the yard (or park) and have him/her practice casting to it with a cork and no hook. This should give you a good gauge of how much help you need.

The Navy base has a nice little pier which should give them plenty of small fish to practice on. A simple small cork popping rig with a medium treble hook will work. You can buy the prefab ones at Academy or Roy's Bait and tackle.

Fishing under the lights at one of the piers can be fun with a school of trout feeding under the lights, but once again, try one at a time unless your other half is willing to help. A five-gallon bucket with an aerator will let them look at their "keepers" until they release them back.

The packery channel isn't bad during the week, especially the part of the sidewalk before the rocks. A couple of small PVC rod holders and a Carolina rig should stir up something for them to catch.

Remember, unless the fish are super active, they will probably be bored after a few minutes. If they get bored and start digging in the sand or throwing rocks in the water, watch the lines, set a hook for them, and let them reel in. I normally didn't plan for more than thirty minutes per trip.

All great replies folks! Thanks for taking the time to share your local knowledge. Went to the pier on base yesterday afternoon and caught some croaker and 1 other I couldn't ID. Had fun, but the aerator in the 5 gal bucket is a great Idea that I will try. Thanks again! Mike
