Had one in a saltwater aquarium when I was in High School. Won't do that again. It got out one night...Found it via the rotten smell a day and a half later... |
We would see them occasionally when free diving the Port Aransas jetties in the late '80s.
The hard freeze that we had in '87(?) killed a bunch of them at the jetties. _________________

| I've posted this before but I was fly fishing for reds in Deadman's 9 or 10 years ago with John Mendleski when we both saw what appeared to be a red with her back out of the water. I waded over and when in range, stuck a Clouser on her repeatedly with no take - but she didn't spook, either, which was weird. We finally walked up on to her only to see that what we thought was the fishes back was actually water humped up by the excurrent siphon of an octopus. Couldn't have been in more than 8 inches of water - pretty amazing. I recall John saying it was the first octopus he had seen in the lagoon. I also remember that it blanched color immediately upon take-off after we gently prodded it. Pretty cool sight. |

| There are more of them out there thatn yall think, My wifes family used to own Witts Pier on the Humble channel before they sold it to Freddy who has it now and changed the name to Red Dot. After storms and High tides they would find them around as well they would climb into there bait boxes and start eating the bait they had for sale. |

They are darn smart critters. I've heard from those in the (supposed) know on TV that an octopus has about the same general intelligence as a cat. That's no dog for sure, but way cool for a mollusk!!! _________________ Dave

On a scientific note, the eye of the octopus this one of the most similar eyes of any animal to that of humans?!?!
WAY different Pyla, but incredibly similar eye structures. Convergent evolution.....Hmmmmmmm. Just a thought to ponder.
And yes, they are very common around here. I come across a number of dens every year on the jetties. |
