I realize that, but sometimes life's greatest lessons are the ones that we learn on our own. I'm not afraid to take my little rig anywhere within reason, which to me means deep enough water to run in, whether that's fast or slow, and waves that fall within my boat handling skills and my boat's ability to handle.

On my home lake the average depth is 30 feet, but there are many wood piles that weren't completely burned back in 1959 when the lake was flooded. I see them on my graph coming almost to the surface and have even hit a few while doing a hole shot. That doesn't stop me from using the area and enjoying myself. I keep the motor unlocked so that in the case of a strike it will at least pop up. I do the same thing when down there fishing LM........................

I will agree with you that for the average boating dillhole, going with a guide is far and away the best thing to do. The heck of it is that many of these same folks could go with a guide a dozen times and still learn and/or remember nothing about where the reefs, rocks, pilings, are, etc. Wink

Let's not forget what started the debate: "Baffin is not dangerous". We can all have opinions about the degree of danger but as compared to 99% of the Texas bay systems Baffin is the most dangerous. I can not think of a single bay system with more challenges. The odds of "finding" rocks is 100 fold more likely than finding the occasional pipe, stump, or crabtrap.

30 years in Baffin with no problems is a miracle or a lose definition of problem. Maps are great for letting you know general areas of trouble but I have banged rocks that ain't marked. I have been with guides who have done the same and they have fished there for years. I suppose if you tilt the motor out of the water, keep your trolling motor high and ready to keep you off the tops of rocks, have calm enough water and great overhead sun to see them and drift everywhere you go it is safe. They don't call it the "Badlands" for nothing.

I agree with everything you said. That's also why it's such good fishing!

The first time that I fished down by the windmills on the KRS I was surprised at the rock benches on the beach, well above the water line. That got me thinking about what was down below........................

I guess we are lucky you guys were not sitting next to the queen when Columbus was asking permission to search for the America's

Laughing Laughing

As for Baffin being the most dangerous bay in Texas, I think that is a matter of opinion, as one of you mentioned, Nueces is plum full of Danger, I have hit junk in that bay system, good news! I was running slow and cautous, I had no noticable damage and I am not telling people to get a guide or a local to fish there.

I'm gonna try this again! there is danger in Baffin! but Baffin is not Dangerous! Rolling Eyes

Point well taken if the goal was to discover a new world as opposed to a new fishing spot. Besides, I have pure selfish motives in mind here...we got enough brave souls in Baffin. Not only is it dangerous beyond imagination but the water has dwarf sickly trout and is full of flesh eating bacteria...

The problem is once you get into them an inexperienced boater will not know which way to go to get to safe water.

Sorry there friend, but I had to chuckle at that one!
Cool He wasn't searching for the "America's", nobody in the old world had a clue that they existed! He was searching for India of all places!!!! Shocked

Columbus was long on chutzpa and cojones and was a gifted navigator, but the truth is that he didn't know where he was going when he left, didn't know where he was when he arrived and didn't know where he'd come from when he got back to Spain!!!!! Rolling Eyes Embarassed

To top it off there is now "Columbus Day" and we celebrate his discovering the Americas. Say what???? People had been living here for at least 14,000 years and that date keeps moving further back in time!

No offense intended, just a good chuckle, as stated.......................... Wink

Capt. Black fishes Baffin more than most, and he even removed a lower unit a couple of years ago on a rock. I've twisted some props on rocks that are not on the charts (plenty of them out there) and luckily kept the lower unit in place.

My advice, if not familiar with Baffin, is to stay in the channel and putt into the shorelines you plan to fish, preferably when the water is clear enough to see the large dark areas just beneath the surface....rocks.

I watched a guy run through the bad lands on plane one morning and can't believe he didn't hit the hard structure...must be living right! Then when he came within forty yards from our boat while we were fishing, I wished he would have hit a rock.

It was supposed to be funny! not historically correct Wink

Now Stump here has the right way of letting folks know that there is Danger in Baffin without condemming the entire Bay, he has not told anyone Don't go there without a local or a guide.

I commend you for your common sense and non scare tactics Wink

I heard that!!!!! Cool Wink

I can't help being a history buff of sorts........................... that and anything nature/geology/geography/science related was what drew my interest! Even though I hated English and grammar the whole time, that too sunk in, even though spelling is still a hurdle at times! Embarassed
