| Was wondering what you guys do to your fishing reels after a days of fishing? I was told from Roys tackle not to rinse them with the water hose just to use some of that corosion-x stuff on a towel and pat them down? What do you guys do? |

| I rinse my stuff off. Rods and reels. I tear my reels down about every 2-3 months to clean and lube. I still have reels that are 30 + years old that work like they did out of the box. Yes I still fish with them, but my go to reel is a curado 200 bsf. |

while I don't doubt the experience of people at Roys, I have never heard of not rinsing the salt water off your gear, especially when it has been dunked or heavily splashed. Corosion X on a towel is great for the outside but does nothing for the internal parts that may have received salt.
I thouroughly rise my reels with low pressure water from the hose, and once dry I apply a single drop of Penn reel oil to the major parts(on my spinner, I do the bearings insid handle, knob of handle, bail hinge, and a single drop down the main shaft. Once a week or more if it has been submerged, I open em up, lightly lubricate with oil, and reapply a little bit of penn greese to the major moving parts, and wipe out any visable salt or sand residue that may be gotten inside. I do th same with the inside of the spool. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Lightly mist off with fresh water, spray rod eyes and reel with Penn reel cleaner, wipe down. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |

Hose off with water and throw in the storage room If they feel rough, oil. If they are really rough, tear down. Line frayed, re spool. But thats just me. Sometimes i got over ten rods to clean after a trip and too dang tired to go through a cleaning process Reels still turn well on every trip _________________ -Mando |

I think that is great advice if you are boat fishing and the reel doesn't get wet. The problem with running water on them is it will force stuff (salt sand) further in the reel. But if you get it dunked or soaked wadeing or for that matter in a boat I take it down that night and clean it. It doesn't take much to crap out bearings and if you don't clean and oil you can count on them not working 100% the next time out. I hate the extra work and can't wait for the day when reels don't have any metal. _________________ Wish I Were in Baffin |

There are "care free" reels nowadays. They just cost >$600 . One day when I can afford it, I will have a full line of Van Staals and Penn Torques, but until then, I break em down, and lube em up. Stinks. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

just do a light rinse if you're gonna use water. when water gets into the reel, it doesn't come out. i use corrosion X, penn protect, or reel magic. spray on, wipe off. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

I am not buying it...all that stuff in the pictures tells me you are a natural born tinkerer. And the rods you build look really nice. You can now tell us how often you tear them down to keep them in perfect shape. Also looks like you have some old war horses. The newer stuff is like a baby compared to the old stuff. _________________ Wish I Were in Baffin |

I BRAKE THEM DOWN ONCE A YEAR ( FULL CLEANING )
DEPENDING ON THE USE. ONE DROP OF 3-1 ON HANDLE'S BEFORE
EVERY TRIP.
I THINK ? IT HAS TO DO IN WHERE YOU STORE YOUR ROD'S.
MINE STAY IN ( CLIMATE CONTROL ) THE HOUSE .
MOST OF THE RODS COST, MORE THAN MY RIFLE'S .
AN I DON'T KEEP THEM IN THE GARAGE OR SHED EITHER.
SO ( CATCH A BIGUN ) !!!!!!!

That's a helluva collection there. Those senators look spanking new. Looks like you have enough shark set-ups to run a small shark-finning operation right there... what? too soon? _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |
