1175 Volunteers. 21.5 miles cleaned 85 tons of trash removed!

Wow! All time record. Thanks to all of you who volunteered, our sponsors, park personnel and those involved with making it a huge success.

As a volunteer for the first time I could quickly see that someone had done an excellent job of organizing and delegating. Every section leader was smiling, well prepared and efficient. The tshirt distribution and lunch also operated smoothly. A pat on the back to all!
Our truck had us from WY Larry and Lois from MI and Kevin and Kathy from NY we all honored to give a helping hand.
The drive down to 24 marker got a little tight coming back.
When we stopped I was happy to meet Donnie who was right behind us going down.

My group went down to the 29. Coming back was a little tight like you said. I had three ROTC students from West Oso. They were really funny. I thought I was in an episode of The Big Bang Theory with their talk about computers and superheroes and how one particular superhero needs to wear a helmet etc etc. It was so funny listening to them talk . The beach didn't seem as dirty as in years past. Although that might have just been our mile that we did.

I agree - well organized and it was great to meet you, Sinker. Met Homer, the Poet on Gulf Coast Fishing facebook page, he had his grand kids with. I told my granddaughter that she and her boyfriend - were coming with next year. It was fun , really was.

Got to tell this funny (to me) story - two sweet girls, about my oldest daughters age (40ish) asked to ride with me (me of the Subaru Outback). I said , load your gear and lets go. It got mushy quicky and they started getting quiet. As we got further south, it got mushier and mushier - and the subie handles it well, but some of those big trucks were digging huge ruts.
The girls started getting nervous, "Sir, so have you done this before ",
me "You mean the Clean up ?"
girls , "No, coming down this far."
me - "Yes, quite often"
Girls - hesitating - worried but wanting to be polite "In this vehicle ?"
me (grinning by now) "Yes, I believe i have been down to mansfield 6 times since this first of the year."
Girls - "and how far is that ?"
me "We are only going to around 24 or so - mansfield is the cut - 61 miles down."
Girls - again "In this car?"
Me, "Yes, ladies - we will be fine".
Girls, "And the shovel in the back - do you have to use that often?"
Me , "No - i have never used it for my vehicle, but have lent it out several times." By now, I have a big grin.

Later after the event, they said they thought the subie handled things great, not sinking down, not rutting the sand, etc. etc. Plus getting around 27-28 mpg.

We are buds now and I invited them to join me and my daughter and go down to the cut, fishing, taking pictures, shelling. And they want to organize a Clean Up Saint Jo Island event, and I volunteered to be their first volunteer.

This was my first time and won't be my last. My brother in law and I drove down from SA and got to the visitor center right at 8 am.

Hopped in with a couple (Teachers) from Dallas in a RAV4. Handled it great. They were very nice and thank you letting us ride with you. Our group started somewhere between the 10 and 15 and worked our way back. What got me was all the water bottle caps I picked up.

Can someone tell me who our group leader was? He was in a white Excursion and was a great group leader as well.

Don't know why I took so long to participate in the clean up. Will definitely be back next year God willing.

Thanks Manuel! What mile marker did you start? Maybe I can tell you who your section leader was.

I got stuck herding cats and students at the parking lot though it was fun to see how the back end worked. We tore down the parking lot and setup the tents and trailer for the post game festivities. Another 100 or more folks trickled in and cleaned in front of the Visitor's Center. Some had car trouble, fog trouble, late babysitters etc.

Another truly remarkable event in the books!

Thanks again to all!

Did you go about 14.5 miles down? If so, Shawn Q. was the section leader.

It was great to see everybody again!
It was someone in our group that found the turtle at the 20+.
It didn't look like it was doing too good. Very heavy algae growth on it and lethargic. Rescue came and picked it up.

As for that other thing- I didden see nuttin!

Proud of all who helped. Would have loved to be there instead of lying in the hospital.
