Met up with Carl B. around 1000 hours on Saturday. I had brought little with me, barely more than a couple of rods and tackle. Loaded the stuff into Carl's truck and we headed south. Driving was great (low tide). We fished in the 20's catching whiting and a few hardheads. I didn't see any bait in the water. The water was clear and a little rough. I was after drum, but didn't catch any. We used dead shrimp, crab and shrimp Fishbites and cut crab. Y-Pass was still closed, much to our dismay.
We made camp at the 19mm Saturday night. Carl made a good dinner and a nice campfire. We got to see that phospherescent stuff in the waves. Pretty cool. I called it an early night while Carl stayed up to fish, catching a lone whiting. I started off sleeping in the tent in luxury (a la air mattress) but wound up moving to the truck sometime early in the morning. I hadn't brought a sleeping bag and was using a towel for a blanket....got a little chilly. A little bit of rain came down during the night.
Carl woke me up around daybreak and said my ice chest was missing from the bed of the truck. Sure enough, it was gone. There were some odd looking drag marks leading from the truck to the dunes. Kinda looked like someone was doing the moonwalk. We found my ice chest approximately 50 yards north of the campsite back behind the dunes. My sandwiches were eaten, my beer and sodas consumed also. Some person(s) had a nice meal at my expense. Oh well, at least I got my ice chest back. A pair of park rangers drove by later in the morning and we reported the theft to them. They weren't able to help alot, but at least I got to talk to that new hottie ranger gal...heh heh.
We fished the 19mm for maybe four or five hours, only getting more whiting. Carl was getting the keepers while I was getting dinks. I never caught the drum I was after, though Sportfisher had caught 13 of them a few days before. I did, however, have some excellent results in casting my 10' Breakaway w/ Penn 525 mag. I finally felt comfortable enough to start releasing the mags on it. I took it down two setting (to #6) and let her fly. Wow! It really does make a difference. After numerous casts and only two birds nests, I feel alot more confident with the reel. Next trip, I'll be taking even more mags off ....look out Cuba
Good to finally meet you, Flak.

See ya on the sand,

| I worry about the theft issue. I sleep like a rock, I think if someone stripped my truck to the frame I would not have a clue till morning time. Has anyone else had problems with people steeling things while you are sleeping in camp? |

I sleep in the truck, with the alarm on. All of the stuff is in the bed, and if you jar the truck or open the tailgate, the alarm will ring. Haven't had any trouble with it, and I honestly haven't realized that there were problems like this. I guess I knew these people were there...but just haven't thought about it much.
I've only stayed overnight on the beach twice, and we were in a pretty good sized group of people both times.
It's a shame that you have to worry about that kind of stuff.

Mando,
How far down were you?
I think that has a lot to do with it. The concentration of people before the 4wd sign probably prevents theft more so than the desolate areas past the 20's. I have seen a few people 'set up' in the dunes with nothing more than a few pieces of driftwood and a tarp. I had no clue where they got water, but I guess they don't need water if they are drinking all of Seabass' beer and soda
The particular guy with the tarp was extremely 'sun dried', poor fella'. Although, I don't have much sympathy for him..because if you are able/strong enough to live off the beach, then you can find a job that will allow you to at least afford an apartment.
Or, I guess he could be a millionaire and just decided to 'rough it' for a while?!
Take care

The homeless situation is a sad one. True, there are a few who are homeless but able body enough to work. Some of these people prefer to be homeless.
Some have fallen on hard times to the point that they could not pay rent, etc, and once out on the street, finding work for them becomes very difficult.
However, the large majority of them would rather not be homeless, but have a physical or mental defects that prevents them from living a normal life such as the guy we saw, uh, loving? his bicycle in downtown San Antonio. Even then, most of these people will congregate together, because people are normally social. Them most unstable mentally challenged person - ie, the ones who are a danger to the public - tend to be loners. Look at all the major serial killers, and the majority were loners.
So if you see homeless people on PINS, stay away from them. They want to be away from others, and seclude themselves. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Two illegals came by our camp at the 40 Sat afternoon. We gave them each water and a sandwich, then told them to leave. I imagine it was the same two that ripped you off. I wish everyone a better life, but have no sympathy for thieves from ANY country. Little did they know that they were having lunch at the end of a .45...Please remember that bigshell is still the wild west. Be especially careful when camping alone. Adios... _________________ No bait is TOO BIG! |

Why doesn't PINS have a few remote call stations?
I assume it is because they try to keep it 'natural', and I love the natural setting.
However, with all of the trash that blows in on the beach and all of the plastic everywhere, it is FAR from natural. I love PINS more than any place I've been on earth. I don't know if it's the remoteness of it, or what. However, I think a lot of the cases like Seabass had could be narrowed down better if he had a way of reporting it sooner. Not to mention the drug running, and other illegal activities. Granted, Seabass didn't lose much of anything valuable, but had a few rods/reels been stolen, or if someone was hurt..then what?
My cell phone will only work in a few remote spots...and it's tough to find them. And, not everyone has cell phones. Is there another way to contact the authorities while down there? Do CB's and Handhelds work?
I'm sure this has been discussed, and there's probably a logical reason why there is no way to get in contact with authorities...I'm just missing it.
Take care

| I do not have one but I think a motion detector alarm can be had from Radio Shack for minimal sum. Gonna get one. It could be placed in a suitable place. Bingo! You wake up and take care of the situation or it scares the intruder off. |

Coyotes would keep you from sleeping though...those dang things are EVERYWHERE.
Although, It is a good idea.
After thinking about this...a few weeks ago I had a generator, a set of halogen lights, and a ton of other crap sitting out overnight, nothing chained or locked down. It would suck to have that stolen.
I had it sitting on the other side of a sand dune when it was running, and then I brought it back to the truck for the full 2 hrs of sleep I got. However, it was still easy-access for any thief.
I need to find a way to secure more of my valuable stuff. My friend has a roll-n-lock bed cover that would be great. It can look at any position, partially rolled up or full rolled up...but they aren't cheap.
Be careful out there!

Dexter,
I actually have one of those small motion detector/alarms from Radio Shack. In fact, I had it in my truck that I left back near the pavement. I usually only use it when I am camping alone. I noarmally sleep in the cab of my truck....putting my ice chest in the bed near the rear window. Then I place the motion detector on top of the ice chest facing towards the open bed. If anyone reaches inside the bed of the pickup, the alarm will sound.
Guess I shoulda brought it with me..
