Howdy all,
This is my first real post (long-time listener, first time caller), although I've been following this board "religiously" ever since my first trip to PINS back in June. Wife's birthday was coming up, and I suggested that we go down to PINS for the occasion, and imagine my shock when she agreed! Initially we were planning on heading down on Friday and staying through the weekend, but after checking the wave forecast and my available vacation days, we decided to leave on Thursday. This was my 4th trip down, and the first time without my "support group" from work, who introduced me to surf-fishing earlier in the summer. So after a mad-spree at Wal-Mart, Academy, and HEB we were finally on our way. We made our way to about 17.5 and found a really nice break in the dunes to camp in, with some decent structure in the water.
It was a really good thing that we decided to go a day earlier, because Friday the beach and the weather were quite nice, and saturday brought higher waves, nastier wind, a whole lot of debree and sea-weed. Both days the wind was fairly strong (stonger on saturday), and the current was the strongest that I ever experienced. I did not dare venture beyond the 1st bar, and did not feel very comfortable there for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Both the wind and the waves were from left to right, which was also unusual. Thursday night there was no moon, and the sky was so full of stars, it was mind-boggling. You could see the Mily Way so clearly, and at least once every 2-3 minutes you'd see a shooting star streaking through the sky! Friday night brought a few clouds, so it wasn't as spectacular.
The sunrise on Friday was gorgeous, the waves about 2-3ft, plenty of bait-fish in the water all around us and birds working the surf. But the fist weren't biting... Not my spoons anyway. The waves were too rough to use top-waters (which I don't believe in anyway because I've never gotten a bit on one, although I keep trying), and I didn't want to mess with trying to keep shrimp alive. So after about an hour of casting spoons and landing only an undersized spanish mac, I busted out my newly-bought cast-nest and got into some minnows. That's when the skipjack fun began. I landed about a dozen skipjacks over the 2 days, some pushing 20". Boy those are fun!
The other highlight of the weekend was me catching my first ever Redfish. Although it was a bit small, he still fought like a champ and certainly made my day.
All in all it was a great weekend, although the higher waves and wind made it a little less fun on saturday. I am still on a mission to catch my first "keeper", but I'm certainly having a great time in the mean while.
