The weather reports weren’t what we were looking for, but the trip was planned and we decided to make the best of it.
The three of us, my son Corey (12), his friend John (12) and myself headed to the coast from San Antonio at 3am. After stops for ice and bait, we finally hit the beach about 630am. Making our way down the beach, the driving was great as it was low tide. When we came up on the 20mm, we ran (literally) into some folks that thought they owned the beach. They were camped a little past the high tide area and had their lines run out from their camp to the water. I didn’t see the lines and hit them with the rods from my rodholder in the back of my truck. One guy was standing outside and came down to where I had come to an abrupt stop. I told him I didn’t expect anyone to have their lines run down from 40yds from the water as this was a very low tide. I untangled my lines and had to put it into 4L to get out of the hole I made when I came to a stop. On my way out Sat evening, these folks were still there, but the tide was high and I had to go around them on the high road. These were folks that probably never read these boards, but if anyone does know who they were, please let them know I won’t be as nice next time. Next time I may just cut their lines to untangle mine and be on my way.
We finally made it down to the 34mm and it was raining so we decided to wait it out. It slowed to a mist after about 45 minutes and we broke out the rods. I tried to cast up some bait, but that was unsuccessful, so shrimp and fishbites it would be.
Corey landed two quick Whiting while I got John set up, this was his first time on PINS and he had never caught a fish before today. John hooked up with his very first fish, a Whiting and now we had a new PINS fisherman.
I caught a couple of rat reds, 18” and 15” before we started to get into legal size. The bite was on and after catching a couple of nice reds, 25” and 26.5” I hooked into my new personal best 41” red.
John caught his first red, a 22 incher that would make anyone proud.
Corey ended the day with his biggest of the day a 27.5” red, rounding out the day with a limit of 27.5”, 24” and 23”
The weather started turning for the worse and we decided to head back to SA, we had to leave them biting, but the tide was coming up fast.
All in all, it was a great day of fishing even though the weather was wet and cold. Days total was 9 Reds from 15” to 41” and about 20 Whiting. We made it back to SA about 730pm, just in time to catch a hot shower and watch the Spurs clean up on Atlanta.
See ya on the sand,

On the way down, my son said he wanted to catch his first red. For him to catch his first limit just made his year.
I will be back down in a few weeks with two more first time PINS fisherman. I can only hope the great fishing holds out.

Great report, and real nice catch!
I'm going the weekend after Thanksgiving, but with no 4x4, I think I'll stay around the BHP area.
Good Luck _________________ even a bad day of fishing beats a great day at work |

|

| Those people at the 20 were still there Sunday Morning. They has baracaded the whole beach by then. They still had their rigs up in the camp at dead low tide and chairs and junk stretched all the way to the water. We had to go into 4wd to get thru the bess behind them from other fishermen having to go around. What a bunch of inconsiderate people. When we returned Sunday late afternoon they had moved to higher ground because of the high tide but still had most of the high road blocked with their junk. They were fixin to go down in the rising water but we didn't even stop to tell them they were in trouble. They gave us a dirty look Sunday morning and Sunday nite. We could only make about 5 mph in the dunes and didn't give a poop about their attitude or blocking the beach. We just smiled as we passed their camp on the way back. Maybe they learned their lesson and are still there. Back in the old days if this happened someone would have had a problem and it wasn't the drivers on the beach. Mike "Hip" Sowden |
