The Caller-Times' paper edition has a nice map of the proposed North Padre developments, but its on-line version has only a link to a postage-stamp-sized map. Nonetheless, here's the link to the on-line version: http://www.caller.com/ccct/local_news/article/0,1641,CCCT_811_4505287,00.html Maybe you can figure out how to expand the map, or buy the paper.
I gave up, apparently prematurely, hope months ago that another Texas newspaper or even the AP would pick up on this issue before Texas lost the right to drive on more of its public beaches. Now John Kelley has begun publishing We The People, which will feature an independent view on it. Here's the link to its first on-line edition: http://wethepeoplenews.org/. Some of you may recognise, despite some editing, a story on page one. Keep your fingers crossed that another paper from outside the Corpus Christi area will spread the word before the March 21 council meeting.

Resort awaits access plans
Schexnailder silent about development
By Nick Nelson Caller-Times
March 1, 2006
Austin developer Paul Schexnailder set the city abuzz three months ago when he announced that an international resort development company planned to build a $500 million beachfront resort on Padre Island.
Schexnailder said the company had signed a letter of intent on Nov. 30 and would spend the next 90 days determining whether to build the resort.
That was 90 days ago.
Schexnailder won't comment on the deal now, but city officials say all parties - Schexnailder, the company and the city - are waiting to see what kind of beach access restrictions the City Council approves. Schexnailder has said the development won't proceed unless 7,400 feet of beach is pedestrian-only.
The council voted late last year to ban vehicles from 4,200 feet of beach in front of the Padre Island seawall, then rescinded the vote to consider including the additional footage in the ban. The vehicle ban sparked a petition drive.
The Caller-Times learned in December that the development company is Vancouver, Canada-based Intrawest Corp. Schexnailder and Intrawest have not acknowledged this. Contacted Tuesday, Intrawest spokesman Tim McNulty declined to comment on the development.
Mayor Henry Garrett said the city is crafting an ordinance that restricts vehicle traffic on the beach along the Padre Island seawall and along the 1,800 feet of beach north of the seawall.
But Garrett said the future of the 1,400 feet of beach south of the seawall is uncertain.
"It's iffy," he said Tuesday. "I think maybe we'll give the council the option and let them decide what to do with it."
Garrett also said the city is considering an amendment to the city charter that would require a citywide vote to approve additional vehicle restrictions.
Garrett said the city staff plans to have the ordinance ready by March 21.
That's three weeks beyond the 90-day deadline, but Councilman Mark Scott said he expects the company to bend a bit.
"If the mayor said we're not prepared to make the decision for six months, I think that could be a deal-breaker," he said. "But I think they're flexible enough to see what the council's decision is going to be in March."
Another group also waits for the council's decision. The Beach Access Coalition was formed to start a petition drive in protest of the October ordinance that banned traffic along the Padre Island seawall. When the council rescinded that ordinance in December, it nullified the petition drive.
BAC Chairman Hal Suter said the group used to meet each Saturday and will likely begin meeting again as the March 21 vote approaches. He said whether the group starts a new petition depends on what the council decides.
Schexnailder is 50-percent owner in Gulf Shores Joint Venture, a partnership that owns the land Intrawest is considering for development. In addition to the Intrawest project, Gulf Shores Joint Venture has plans for a resort community called BeachWalk Village at the south end of the island's seawall.

I saved it to "my pictures" and it came up enlarged and easy to read. Since all parties involved are being so quite you know some under the table stuff is going on. Sure would be nice to have a billboard up somewhere for all the spring breakers to see that in a few years the beach will be closed. _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |

It does look like the public will loose access to the south jetty with out a long hike. But why would the high and mighty staying at the resort want to be bothered with the local folks. Other than to bring room service or clean the room. One of the biggest things about this is that the city needs to close the beach before we find out what is going to be built. _________________ Broken or not fix it!
