OK, know I am about to stir up a hornets nest between all you Chevy, Ford, Dodge (and so on) fans but am trying to get some info on the best type vehicle for beach driving. I am thinking of trading in the old truck for something bigger. Lookin to go used and not be kept off the sand by an inability to put gas in the damn thing. Need something big enough to haul all my stuff (compressor, coolers, tackle boxes, and all that stuff) that will be comfortable to hooch up in for extended trips. Any ideas would be appreciated as I do not want to spend more than need be but I want something I can have for awhile that will also get around SA.
Tyler, sorry if I start any truck wars here !!!!! _________________ "I don't wanna live on that kind of island, no I don't wanna swim in a roped off sea. It's too much for me, too much for me; I gotta be where the wind and the water are free." -- Jimmy Buffet

I seen them all down the beach. Get the best price and then get it Ziebarted ASAP. Get it re-Ziebarted once a year!. Clean it after every trip to the beach with low pressure water hose. Be sure to crawl up under the truck and spray sand off wells, suspension and frame. Check all frame drain holes for sand.
Do those things and you should be good with any model. It's all about corrosion. A poorly maintained truck is a problem no matter which company made it! _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

| if gas mile age is a worry go with an import like toyota or nissan. the toyota tocoma is a nice truck that gets good mileage and if you like suv's the nissan xterra has alot of room for it's size and gets about the same mileage as the tacoma. me personally i have a 3/4 ton gmc but it kills me on mileage and soon as i can i'm trading it for either the tacoma or the xterra unless i decide to get a deisel then i'll just get the diesel version of what i have now |

A question like that will only get positive responces from people on what they currently own/drive. Just like asking what the best kayak is out there. Same thing.
All I can say is buy American if you want a bigger truck. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

If looking for an SUV, I can tell you I have had nothing but good experiences with my 03 Durango. Have pushed it through really soft sand, shell, you name it, and never even thought about sticking. I have only had it in low twice, when I first got it, because I didn't know the limits of the truck yet. Turns out, I didn't need it then either! Ran past a lifted F-250 burried to the frame in really soft stuff without even starting feel any bog down. The key is wide street tires, good clearnce, and a limited slip rear differential. If the sand is really soft, you can air down a bit to increase the tire width even more. You just want a good weight to surface contact ratio.
Of course without common sense, you can stick anything out there, so using your noodle is the most important thing. I have seen one of those big 1980's Bronco twos with a 12 inch lift and 40" Micky Thompson's stuck on JP Luby before. He needed a jumpstart, because he figured he party since he was stuck, and drained out the battery blasting the radio. I drove up next to him in my stock 1984 Nissan Sentra, gave him a jump start, and drove off. Meanwhile, 4 of his buddies dug and pushed for nearly 30 minutes to get him moving again.
Maybe one weekend, we should have a beach driving seminar to trade tips and demonstrate the right and wrong ways to drive out there. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

I have a 05 Xterra and I love the thing. I had a huge dodge that only got me 11miles to the gallon, but the Xterra pulls off 17 driving the beach with 4 high in. The family sleeps in it, I have a hatch tent. All my gear goes on my 5x10 trailer. The trailer has 30's under it and the whole rig can run on soft shell. During regular driving it consitantly pulls 18.2 to 19 MPG. _________________ "When it comes to fishing, GOD blesses kid's and fools" |

| Big John said you can stick anything. I bet it would be next to impossible to stick the yellow Hummer. |

I recommend a full size truck, single front axle, heavy duty suspension, enough spring lif to accomodate oversized tires wide enough to "float" on the sand, recovery equipment and a tool box.
Emergency vehicle paint job is a nice extra.

| SurfRanger95 every one of us will be selling what we drive no matter what is realy the best. We are on our fourth Grand Cherokee. Never been stuck on the Island or anywhere else. Common sense prevented that. If you try hard enough it can be stuck. If fuel costs are a concern go for the fuelinjected inline six with Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive. If you can find one with the upcountry package you'll be offroad ready with skid plates, beefedup suspension and shocks. Just add some taller tires and perhaps a K & N air intake and a 3" lift kit and ride the sand in comfort. I know, I've got the bad back from hades and the GC lets me go in comfort instead of pain......... here is a link to a site for off-roading the GC, http://www.off-road.com/jeep/cherokee/xjprojects/xj-projects.html, check it out. |
