| Is the channel open and is water flowing in the Laguna Madre ? I heard the salinity in the LM is 56% greater than in the surf - will it adversely effect the surf? Any news? |

It is open and flowing...however, where in the Laguna is the salinity 56% higher? North of the JFK Causeway or South of the Causeway? If south, then I do not think it will effect the surf as the water exchange is still very low for south of the causeway. _________________ FISH ON!!,

Up from my nap now. Needed one since starting at 4 AM to prepare the statement for the Council Meeting.
Last I knew, the pass was open as far as water movement was concerned, although for boats it was highly questionable. Lots of sand bars in it, especially at the mouth.
The amount of Laguna water reaching the Gulf, even when the pass is fully reopening, is negligible compared to the dilution power of the Gulf itself. Look at it this way, the salty Laguna water flows into the Gulf every day through the much larger Channel to Port Mansfield w/o any negative impacts on the fishing that I've ever heard. Quite the contrary, it seems, from all the reports. |

The exchange should not affect the surf much regardless of where the higher levels are in the laguana due to the massive amounts of water it would be diffused into when the tide is on the way out.
The tide going in and out of the lagunua is like putting 5 gallon bucket in an Olympic size swimming pool, and then drilling a 1/4 inch hole in the bucket.
The exhange may lower the hyper salinty level in the upper laguna quiet a bit over time, but will have almost no impact on the waters of the gulf. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
