|
|
Hey y'all. Being this will be my first extended winter here in Texas, was wondering if the water gets cold enough to require any sort of wet suit for wading in the surf. I have some waders but was kicking the idea around for a wet suit when looking at some of the pictures posted from previous years. Any recommendations or given the short cold weather season here, will it be a waste of money? I appreciate it and have a good one. _________________ "I don't wanna live on that kind of island, no I don't wanna swim in a roped off sea. It depends on if you ar a polar bear or not.
Waders are usually sufficient. Difficulty is putting on extra clothing and then your waders unless you have larger sizes for cold weather. |

Being a kayaker, I prefer a wet suit. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

Yep, that water gets pretty cold, and the often fast current just help push more cold water past you cooling you down quicker. You need waders to insulate out the cold, so you stay warm. I have a pair of the real cheapies from Academy that do the trick just fine.
The main danger from moderately cool water like now, is that it doesn't feel too cold initially, then you get out there, and it starts to cool you faster and faster as you go into deeper water. Then you end up with a severe calf or thigh cramp out in the first or second gut with no way to fight the current.
If you aren't ventureing past the first bar, and can stand the colder water temps around your ankles, thne skip the waders. This is often the route I take, because loading up wet and sandy waders can be a hassle. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

I appreciate the responses -- think I will keep my waders handy until I get my kayak and then go with a wetsuit. Probably be next winter before that plan comes about . Thanks again, you all saved me some money! _________________ "I don't wanna live on that kind of island, no I don't wanna swim in a roped off sea. I bought the wetsuit mainly because of kayaking baits. If it wasn't for that, I would probably just wear my waders.
I fished with BeachBum Friday and he used both. |

I have always used waders. Just look out for a any larger waves if you happen to be around waist deep. The water is just as cold inside of your waders!! _________________ A BAD DAY FISHING BEATS A GOOD DAY WORKING ANYTIME. OH WAIT THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD DAY FISHING! |

| I usually wear a cheap rain jacket over my waders to prevent that. Get one that has the strings that allow you to pull it tight. Works real well and keeps you warmer when the wind is cold. |
