what's the best way to put line on a spinning reel without getting the line twisted?
The only way to do that is if you wind it on sideways spool to spool which is impractical and wrong. How you wind line depends on the type of reel you have. The one well known way is to place the spool of line flat and reel the line on. If it twists flip the spool over. However, improvements over the years on some reels recommend line be wound on to the reel in the same fashion as with a bait caster. |

I'm a HUGE egg-beater fan....I just wrap my line tight around the reel and loosen the drag before I put up rod/reel combo at night..... If ya want to get the coils out, try stripping line out behind a boat, with no weight attached, and let the "wake" of the churning water straighten your line back out. Personally, I'd rather put up with the line wrapping around the top guide tip than a backlash any day on a Curado baitcaster! _________________ "I just got a new fly-fishing rod and reel for my wife. the line needs to come off the spool of line and lay on the spinning reel spool the same way it comes off the spool.

I pretty much solved the problem by switching to Fireline. Last for at least a year and no more birdsnest from twisted line.

I use that braided Power pro for chunking lures, but you really need mono for longcasting, as braid does not hold up well against the sandbars. Frays to heck and back in no time, and breaks off easy.
Buy some Big Game 20 or 30 lb test, and just put it on the floor label side up about 10 feet in front of you. If you have a two piece rod, just use the bottom half of the rod, and run it throught the one eye and down to the pole. Tie and reel, holding your hand around the line and rod up close to the eye to add a little tension. Not much though or you will slice your hand open. Reel at a nice medium slow retrieve. The line should go on smooth and kink free. Once you are done, tie the end off around the pole above that single eye, and tighten slightly. Too tight, and the line on top will press through the rest of the spool. Cast your first cast out with only the weight, and try to chunck it to Cuba, and get as much line off as possible. Then reel in with a moderately fast retrieve. Not too fast. This will leave a nice snug reel of line, and get you maximum castability. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

| When you put the line on a spinning reel. Have a person hold the spool so the spool spins and the line is coming off the bottom . You crank your reel slowly and evenly do not run the line between your fingers to put tension on ,that's what twists it. Have the person holding the spool hold a thumb on the spool for tension. |

My cousin from Alaska is a huge fan of spectra/braided line....It works good for him on the rivers there; but I have no need for that "expensive junk"! ......Just getting a backlash on my 4/0 wide nearly draws blood....I can only imagine what thinner diameter line would do on the sandbars or my poor thumb! _________________ "I just got a new fly-fishing rod and reel for my wife. Rule of thumb for spincast reels, set the spool on the ground wih the label up and it will go on the reel properly. However if someone didn't tell the line maker this and you start getting twist just flip the spool over.
Spincast? My bad, openfaced spining? Dont matter it'll work for both.

Spincast reels? Aren't those the push buttons compromised between a spinning and conventional reel -- a Zebco 33? ....Regardless, I love those cheap-arse reels more than my expensive Penn reels.....
Pinsjeepster, Don't forget that local garage sale and using that 50 cent hard-copy of Tom Sawyer (sorry, Rush fans, of which I am the biggest fan!!!), to run mono through it when creating drag to reel line in onto reel! _________________ "I just got a new fly-fishing rod and reel for my wife. Don't follow this direction, unless you want a huge blow-up on casting. In fact, as soom as you fill your reel up and the line is free from the spool it came on, it should "sprring off" the reel. The more line you pull off, the more will spring off. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

| I always put line on a spinning reel the same way it goes on. Do not wind it off the spool. One thing I do is use a damp wash cloth to run the line through as well to give it some tension. This has solved a lot of those problems. Also, do not crank your reel when the spool is turning. This adds a ton of twist to your line. If you develop twist there are a couple of things you can do. One is run it behind a boat like someone suggested. You can do the same thing at the beach by taking a long stroll down the beach. Do not have anything attached to it. Should be bare. Just let the line out while you walk. Then walk a little longer to get the twist out. It actually works pretty well. I have done this on extreme occasions. |

Use a baitcaster and adjust the brake system properly and you wont have those problems..... Not even a backlash....... |

Big John I got those instructions on putting line on a spinning reel from Rocky
at Roys and it works just, fine. As long as you have a person to help you. |

In that case, there is someone putting tension on the spool, and it will work. Don't attempt it on your own though, or that spool will be jumping all over the place!
I retract my previous statement on that as long as you follow pinjeepsters recommendations of another person. It woul;d be essential. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
