Redfish Bay Report June 8-11th

Troy and I hit South Bay Wednesday pm June 8th to fish a little that evening after driving from Midland. We worked that Horseshoe of deeper water that intersects MC cut and Aransas Channel. We later drifted some of South bay on that end and moved over to Hog Hole area. Only one ‘keeper’ trout. Did drift over a huge trout at Hog Island area. It was at least 8inch from back to belly….So vivid I can still see the spots…Why didn’t she hit our baits 3 minutes prior as we drifted into the area? that’s like missing a nice buck…it will just haunt you…We were entered in the CCA thang..so that could have been Troy’s winning ‘babe’. oh, well..

Thursday morning we hit South Bay hard on a high tide on the East edge. First time in and moved slowly along the shoreline chasing a school of smaller Reds. Troy was throwing a silver/blue She Dog and netted a 23 inch Red.

He also picked up a nice 17 inch trout. Supper was secure. Always our first goal !! I lost a hook up in that red school on a DOA Shad Red/White. Troy then proved he might have promise as a ‘trick fisherman’.. He was really working that She Dog hard…loud and noisy..I called him the ‘Agitator’. He was driving the little dink trout crazy…He got a nice hookup…only to bring up to boat..A 17inch Red on front hook and a nice 18-19inch trout on the back hook…but before I could net…the little Red rolled over and knocked his buddy trout off. Too cool….Would have made a great picture. Fished to 3pm and hit the pool at Hawthorn and then to the Port A beach so we could play.

Friday to Dagger Island Area with moderate 15-20winds as previous days. High tide am again so thought would try some up close island fishing with cut bait. Hoping to see bait fish holding up in the wind with some nice Reds feasting along the shore. Pulled in and saw several guides had the same idea. So thought we might …just might..be ok. Started about 500yards off shore in 3 ft water. looke great..nice sandy/shell bottom. Moved twice slowly in 150 yds each time. Had just seen each boat on each side boat nice 25-28 inch Reds…Man…I’m thinking….this is got to be it.!!
After about 20min…my rod tip end was bending to the water..I reeled down on the cut mullet on a castabubble setup..fishing bottom..After catching 4 Reds 17-19inch…as I firmed up the set hook ..just hoping the line would pull away to prove it’s a better fish.. Wow..it was…I would take in 10 yds of line and he would make a ‘run’. Several more runs. First time I saw the fish, it was about 25 yds out. A great sign for a great fish. Got to the boat and made several other runs. Troy was my ‘net man’ and handed me the net and he was in. !!! 32.5 inch 12 pounds. A real stud Red !!

Saturday…went to same spot as Friday..but less wind ..so less luck with bait hanging up in the area. nevertheless, a great time.

Super trip was ours..and we headed to meet the girls in SA. Thanks so much for all the great fishing dudes on this board.. Goin Coastal, Charlie Golla, and Tyler. Best regards to all !!...til next yr.. see ya

Heard the wind was really blowing all week but it sounds like it didn't stop ya'll. Could it be that folks in South Texas have a different understanding of what strong winds are than those of us who live in Midland?

Look for my report on Sunday. Baffin here I come. Very Happy

See ya
