Went out early in the morning and tried at each of my usual spots using live shrimp. Even the hardheads weren't biting. Kept moving from one spot to another looking for fish. About 8:30 as I was drifting very slowly with the calm winds past a shallow reef something caught my eye and I looked down. The boat was surrounded by a school of redfish. Since they were right under me I couldn't move, just watch and hope they didn't spook too bad. After a couple of seconds they spooked, I waited a little before slipping the anchor over the side. Then I reeled in the bait and started working a gold spoon. On the second cast I hooked up with a nice red. Not sure how long it took to get him in but from the first time I worked him up to the boat until I netted him was another 7 minutes. While I was fighting him I watched the school swim by in the shallow water towards the reef a couple of times. Also as I got him near the boat I saw two reds swimming side by side with the one I am hooked up with, that was really amazing. When I got him in the boat I could tell that he was easily oversized. Put him up on my ruler and he was about an inch longer than my yardstick. 37" red is a personal best for me, the next closest had been about 33". Sure wish I had a camera onboard. Anyway after easing him back over board I got a drink of water and started looking for the school again. In a couple of minutes I saw them swimming in the shallows and pitched the gold spoon in front of them. Immediately was hooked up again! After a much shorter fight I netted a 30" red. Released him also and started looking for the school to come by again. Nada, guess they got tired of entertaining me. Anyway managed to pick up a keeper 27" red later in the day. Other than being so hot and still it was a wonderful day to be fishing. _________________ When it's all said and done,
