Going threw the pics of last year I saw alot of big stone crab claws. It looked like they where taken while going for flounder. I had a blast catching stone crab last sept. and oct. useing ring nets. How did the guys in the kyacks get a hold of these? And where? Do I need to find oyster reefs in order to find the big ones? I have always caut mine off of sea walls around Port A.
And here is another stupid question: If all these stone crab are around when the water is warm, why is stone crab season (comercial) in the winter?? |

Stonecrab,
I've only caught stone crabs in the summer while gigging for flounder. I'd find them around oyster reefs or some other structure wading in the flats from the highway that leads from A-Pass to Port A. Never do see them in the winter though, but I know they have to be around. I LOVE stone crab meat. They are excellent boiled in Zatarrain's.
I don't know why the commercial season is in winter. Perhaps stone crabs spawn in summer and they don't want the breeding interrupted.
I imagine that the Port A south jetty holds good numbers of stone crabs, though i don't know how you'd get to them unless you have a really long handled net.
