Guys- I am going down to Rockport this weekend to do some bay fishing(wading to be specific). Do you think I will have any luck with shrimp on a popping cork? I usually do the surf at Pins, so I need to know what to use for what in Rockport. Any help will be appreciated. _________________ "Fish On"! |

Mick, I think you'll do fine with live shrimp under an Alameda Rattling Cork. I've gotten to where I'm using DOA shrimp under an Alameda, and it works for specks. Live shrimp may get you a few more bites, but lures are so much easier to deal with. Cheaper too.
I'd also consider bringing some soft plastics on jigheads if I were you. I like the Norton Bull Minnows, but others prefer other plastics.
I'm also a big fan of the DOA Crabs for targeting Redfish.
It's been a while since I've carried live bait, but I haven't thrown my bait bucket away. Sometimes I just like to put a bait out there and kick back with a cold beer, waiting on a bite. _________________ Chad Landry

I agree with Chad though I might add a 1/8 ounce gold Johnson Silver Minnow tipped with a fishbite. With that and maybe your favorite color bass assassin you ought to be able to catch something.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'll post some pics if things go well. _________________ "Fish On"! |

Chad, what colors do you like for those DOA crabs? _________________ Life is like a 14 inch trout - too short!

The ones I've used so far have been Moss Green and Avocaco/Red Glitter.
I'm gonna try different colors soon to see if they work. Got a brown crab rigged on a rod right now, getting ready for this evening. |

| Like Tyler mentioned above, a gold spoon with a small strip of fishbites on the hook has worked very well for me lately. I used a Bagley spoon with the hammered finish and pulled out around 10 or so reds in Estes near the Klondikes recently. Good luck. |

An alternative to that is the Krocadile line of spoon at Academy. They are not had hammered, but do have various cuts on them that reflects alot of light in different directions.
Fishbites are sold at both Walmart and Academy down here now, so they should be in your stores up there now too. |

For a trailer the regular shrimp is best. Color depends, just like anyother lure on any given day. The best thing to do is have an assortment of colors to chose from. I always have the white, green, pink, yellow, and orange with me. Sometime I pick up the ones with the glitter in them too. Just like chosing which color jig or mirrolure will work best that day, you will do the same with them.
Good luck! |
