I have just acquired 2 Penn 114 HWL Senators with 2 10ft Gulf stream Graphite rods from a buddy who used them for sharkfishing out of his yak (got that too!). I plan to give that a try in the near future. My questions are can I use this set up for Reds as well? Seems like overkill to me. What size line, is there a size that will accomodate both?
He also parted with 3 Penn Longbeach 68's which I plan to use in the surf for Reds and other critters. Again what is a recommended line for these reels? These rods and reels look fine to me but would like to hear from others about their quality/durability. He gave me his advice but i'd like to hear other opinions. My buddy tired of the surf and is now concentrating on bay/bass fishing.

I use 50 pound big game on my 114 HLW and 30 or 40 pound big game on my longbeaches and 113 HLW.

As for the LongBeaches I wouldn't trade for mine. Just like a Timex watch, takes a lick'n and keeps on tick'n. I've never gone much heavier than 20# test on them. I like a limber line, it just casts easier for me. Pack the drag washers with ABU Silicote w/Teflon and just let the drag work 'em over.
