Has anyone used these reels?

Has anyone used these reels on the beach?

I just got one for Valentine's Day from my AWESOME Girlfriend! Cool

Now, I need to do a review on it prior to using it, just in case I need to take it back. Anybody have any comments on these?

Thanks in advance
Shawn

ShawnQ,

I don't have that one, but I've got one similar (Calcuttta 700 TE). Your new reel looks like it can handle the big ones for sure. That power crank handle... man, you'll love it when you've got a big one on. That crank handle and gearing should be awesome! Instead of the thumb press bar, I prefer that side level.

I'd keep that reel. Hey, I'd keep your girlfriend too. Every man needs a significant other who knows how to hit the hot buttons... fishing gear. Laughing

Mr. C.,

I was thinking that it was based off of a mix between the Calcutta and the Trinidad reels.

It is very smooth, solid, and has the ARB bearings...which I think the Calcutta lacks.

I'll give it a shot next time, and be sure to post my review.

By the way, that GPS I bought off of you finally crapped out. For some reason it wont power up now...I got my $50 out of it though Cool

Take care
Shawn

I BOUGHT MY SON A TEKOTA FOR HIS BIRTHDAY LAST YEAR AND HE HAS CAUGHT SOME BIG DRUM AND NICE REDS OF BOB HALL WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. JUST RECENTLY TOOK IT TO ROY'S FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. HE HAS THE 600 MODEL, BUT I IMAGINE THEY WORK JUST AS WELL....

Thanks for the info Jess.

This one will see casted baits like mullet, whiting, etc. for bull reds, big drum, and shark.

I wouldn't mind hooking a jack or tarpon on it either...that would give it a test Wink .

I was thinking about using it for the kayak fishing, but I'm afraid of taking a nice reel out on the yak. I think I'll use the 4/0 or the 4/0W for that.

We'll see how it does during the beach cleanup!

Take care
Shawn

Shawn,

That reel should handle good size sharks, IMHO in the upper 7ft-8ft range with out any problems, don't be afraid of yakking it out with a good size bait.
A friend of mine has two of them and hasn't had any problems with them. They have smooth drags, that have never hesitated under heavy loads (6'+ tarpon), they cast really well considering they have a level wind, they have a one piece frame, and the ARB's. Basically you have one bad A midsized reel on you hands.
Even if you don't like it don't get rid of it. That will not stand well with your G/F, believe me been there done that....LOL.
BTW what pound test did you put on it?
You might want to get a cover for it for the trips to and from PINS, i've found thats when the most sand gets on them.

Fred.

Fred,

I had originally planned on using it as a casting rod. However, I mated it up with my American Rodsmiths rod yesterday, and I like it better on a 7'er than on a 10'er. It is a pretty bulky reel, so it may be akward casting it. However, I'm sure I will try it a time or two on the Tsunami 10'er I have, and see how it does.

As for the line, it's got 30lb Big Game on it, only because that's what Academy had at the time. It was free, so my g/f went with it. I personally wouldn't mind loading it up with 50lb or 65lb power pro...we'll see.

If I was to take it back, it would be to exchange for a smaller version, but I've decided to keep it. I know better than taking gifts back from significant others Wink

Take care, see ya on the sand.

Shawn
