Question: What's proper when it comes to tipping a fishing guide? I've heard different stories.

G., first of all, if the guide puts you on some fish, and if you want to use him again, don't be cheap. Believe me, he may remember you in the future. I say 20% is good. Anybody? Beuler?

We've had this discussion before, with very heated debate.
Anyway, I would say the majority feel you should tip like you would at a resturant:
No fish and bad service = no tip
No fish, but good service = 10%
Some fish, good service = 15%
Lots of fish, bad service = 15%
Lots of fish and good service = 20% |

| I have fished with the same guide for the past 10 years. Usually fish with him twice a year and nine of the 10 years he has put us on fish. Several times we have limited out on Trout and Reds. One year we had limits of Drum and Reds, with some good Trout thrown in for good measure. I have a good relationship with this guide so I usually do the 20% tip. The one year we did not catch many fish(7 Trout), he actually lowered his fee to less than half. |

probably agree with Big John as what I've actually done in past. Got surprised last year when the guide didn't clean the fish...great guide, great with kids, great service..a pleasure to fish with...but didn't clean the fish...so kinda a downer...but at least had 6 or 7 Reds to clean....but more surprised than anything.
Get ready for the pics, Big John...Troy and I are headin' your way early June
See ya

Sounds good - can't wait to see the pics.
If your gonna hire a guide, look up Mike Singleterry for Port A and points south or Brent Hopkins for points north of Point A. Tell them I sent ya. Neither will disappoint ya either! |

| I thought you were already paying the guide to put you on fish? Does it cost extra to have him put you on fish? Why tip someone for something you have already paid for? People talk bad about me because I don't tip the girls at Sonic who bring my food out to the car. If I did that then I would have to tip the cashier at Circle K for handing me a lottery ticket and tip the girl at Mc Donalds who hands me my tray. Things like this are included in the price we already have paid. Funny how people only want to provide good customer service when they get paid extra for it. I guess I am old fashion, I still think you provide good service out of pride in your work, if you get a little extra then great, if not you feel good knowing you provided the best srevice you could. I'm sure this reply will get torn apart but it bothers me when you go somewhere and they have a sign posted stating that you are expected to tip so much for the service provided. I guess I will start wearing a sign that states what level of service I demand from the establishment. |

I would tip your guide about 15 to 20%. BTW, I never used to tip the Sonic girls but I do now. The amount depends on how cute they are. Don't know how that would work with fishing guides. Well, there's Tricia...... |

I dont get tips where I work & dont expect them, Im paid a decent wage. After paying a guide 4-500$ for 4-6hrs kinda hard to cough up some more!
Waiters are different, get like $2 an hr. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

| I wish a guide would answer this post. I would like to know what they expect. I have tipped in the past but I don't feel right about it after I have paid $500 for the service. |

OK marweb0, I'm a guide and I'll answer your post, but I'll speek for myself as each guide is an individual business man.
I don't EXPECT any type of a tip. My cost and profit are in the price of my charter. After reading some of these posts most of the people who have posted think it is mandatory to tip the guide and seem to think that the guide expects a tip and that the guides prices are too high anyway.
There are guides out there with cheaper prices and guides out there with higher prices. Heck, shop the prices if your looking to use a guide, get references. IT'S YOUR MONEY

Gentlemen,
I recently posted a request for you all to give me some ideas on offshore guides to use. I am expecting to pay around a thousand dollars for a eight hour trip and this topic was in the back of my mind thinking if the guide does a wonderful job putting us on fish does this mean I should tip the guide another two hundred dollars? If so, I better wear those deep pocket pants Thanks,
