| Lost another big redfish yesterday when my mono snagged up on an oyster shell cluster. Last year I used Power-Pro 20lb. and enjoyed extremely good abrasion resistance but had difficulty casting. It seemed as though the cast would stop in mid-flight as if it bound down in the spool. Anyone have any experiences similar?. Advice is greatly appreciated. Wumpus. |

Try using a heavier mono leader, or even a steel one.
Power Pro will dig into the spool, sometimes even if its packed onto the reel very tightly. I just use mono now and said "to hell with braids." |

Sounds like you are using it with a baitcaster. I like the 14lb Fireline but only use it on a spinner. I have used 60 pound power pro on a 6500 Abu. Flakman used the same setup catching peacock bass and it worked great. I think the bigger diameter would work better on a baitcaster. You should also use a rod with more of a medium action and softer tip. A stiffer fishing rod with that and a redfish will shake your arms off.

Very true, Tyler.
I have read all about it online, or so it seems; but when I'm ready to snap my rod in two in frustration, at having waisted 30 bucks of braid, its hard to think straight! LOL
Some claim having such heavy braided line with an accompaning lighter capacity drag will inevitably result in stripped gears. I say it depends on how tightly one cups or thumbs the spool that determines the amount of drag pressure beyond its stated capacity, not the line rating! _________________ "I just got a new fly-fishing rod and reel for my wife. I use 20# Powerpro on a spinner w/o much problem. Tyler uses 14# Fireline on his spinner successfully. You need to use a good swivel and reel line in tight or wind knots can become a problem. I have not had much success on baitcasters till I got up to 65# Powerpro diameter. This weight line works good on a ABU 6500 CSM with heavier lures (>1/2 oz). problem line diameter is nearly equal to 17# test line which also works well on a ABU 6500 CSM and costs a lot less.
Basically light Spectra lines are great on spinners and heavier lines can work well on baitcasters. Backlashes are costly. Lots of guys use spectra between a lone layer of mono on the spool and the casting top shot of 50 yards of mono. They just replace the ~50 yards of of the mono top shot regularly. This works well on small spool reels like Shimano Curado SF. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

| I was in Roy's last week and picked up a 300 yrd spool of some Spider Wire Fusion that is braid or something like braid with a mono coating on it. Very interested to see how it casts compared to mono and braid. Will have to report back to the board about how it works. |

These lines have almost no memory. That's why the thin <20# lines work so well on modern spinning reels that cross wrap this thin line on the spool. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

| I have had pretty good luck around the reefs and some old duck blinds using xt. It doesn't cast quite as far as xl, but it does the job. The fusion mentioned earlier in a post is good too. It casts just like mono. |

| Maybe I'm to old school. Its a great tough line but I had a hard time with the feel and the sound of it running though the guides. Almost like finger nails on a chalk board to me. I just de-spooled quite a bit and I'm going to try some yozuri hybrid and some sufix. I did not like changing lures on it, hard to cut. No stretch left some of my stiff rods out of place. It also fades real quick, before you know it, its white and frayed. |

Sounds like you are using Fireline. It does fade. Mine is gray yet I have yet to see it fail. Fireline does not make that weird whine however that I hear when Blair Wiggins is using it on his tv show. That is annoying. I do like the fact that I can distinguish a bite using it. I can tell if I hit a mullet versus getting an actual bite. The key is to play your drag. Have it a little tight then immediately back off as quick as you can. I do lose a lot of fish but I think I detect more bites and get more hookups using it. You really need to use a softer rod because a stiff one will lose more fish.

Last November I had the pleasure of fishing with the Gollas and Charlie put me on some Jacks, fishing with Power Pro on a 9' Tsunami Rod/Mitchell Nautil reel. The PP performed flawless. I was using a spooner lure. The Fatmamma. I beleive I use 12 lb diameter PP without any problems. I fought a 25 lb jack using this setup and wouldn't trade it for mono at all. _________________ BigDaddy
