I was refered to this thread from a National 4wheelers club, Im in the Washington chapter. This thread has our national club members in quite an uproar in regards to those individuals behavior. Also has us reinforcing our rules/regulations more so. I just wanted to agree with all your comments on them, and thank you for sending emails/voicemails to the local club they were part of. On another note I just wanted to apologize, not that Im a president of any 4wheel club, for their behavior. Our local chapter takes pride keeping trails as pristine as possible. But I know there are the few that make us all look bad, we are working on taking action against those who do. I just thought I would drop in my 2 cents, I dont mean to offend anyone or intrude. Thank you.

Thanks for weighing in. Those of us who fish that area have 4wd vehicle because they are required, and do realize that these guys actions do not represent those of the general public, but only themselves.
In fact, I believe the 4wd club in question is more like a group of people who work together and use the club as a means to advertise their business more than enjoy true responsible 4wd enjoyment.
The driving is challenging enough on PINS much of the year to offer enjoyment and fun without destroying other areas, especially as the summer months progress and the soft sand stacks up. Those who want to challenge themselves and their driving abilities need only to drive on down the beach at high tide. Don't forget to bring fishing poles and sunscreen! |

F-ing idiots. I do not care if it's PINS or Matagorda but making new ruts behind the dunes is against every "thread carefully" policy the 4WD community adheres to.
On PINS it is a serious crime, jail time and confication of their vehicles can result.
If you see someone abusing the previledge we have to drive on the beach, get the plates, descriptions and TURN THEM IN! _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

Hello,
My name is Kurt Pratka and it is my email address (kurt@toughcountry.com)that is linked on the Tough Country website. In response to the threads that are currently circulating regarding the pictures that were posted on our website, I would like to note that any and all of the "offensive" pictures have been removed.
Nearly all of the pictures on the site that depict 4 x 4 activity are contributions from our customers and/or like minded individuals. We at Tough Country apologize for the mistake of posting these contributed pictures, and will screen future contributions much more closely.
With regard to all of the pictures, and since most were contributed, we cannot possibly discern the whereabouts of where all of the pictures were actually taken. Some of the pictures that were actually taken on private property were placed in the pages due to space considerations. The pictures that were actually taken on PINS--specifically the pictures of the jeep that appears to be behind the vegetation line, were on the road/trail that runs alongside of the Port Mansfield Channel. As the vehicles were traveling the road/trail, that one in particular became stuck and had to be pulled out.
It must be noted however, that shortly after the vehicle was pulled out from the road/trail beside the PMC, a park ranger did visit the camp and she explained the error of our ways. From that point forward, the entire group followed her instructions explicitly. In addition to being visited by the Park Ranger, members of the US Coast Guard and US Border Patrol also visited our camp frequently during our stay on the PINS.
Holding a company such as ours responsible or up to boycott for the activities of individuals is ludicrous at best. If you are going to suggest such a course of action, then why not hold JEEP, Ford, Dodge, and General Motors responsible or up to boycott as well? Certainly they do not accept responsibility for the actions of individual drivers of their vehicles, as Tough Country cannot accept responsibility for those same individuals who choose to display a sticker.
Tough Country does not condone or endorse any destructive or detrimental activities. In fact, some of the individual employees are very active in keeping the Texas beaches clean and open. In March of this year, some of our employees and friends participated in Captain Billy Sandifer's Annual Beach Cleanup on PINS. The following weekend, the same individuals conducted a beach cleanup on Matagorda Island. Their efforts on Matagorda Island netted three dump-truck loads of garbage that was picked up starting at the 3 mile cut and extending the next 4 miles. In fact, if you would like to participate in the next Matagorda Beach cleanup effort, please contact myself or Richard (richard@toughcountry.com).
If you have any questions or would like respond directly to me, please feel free to do so.
Thank You,
Kurt Pratka

Kurt, Thanks for the clarification. You see lots of folks want to protect our rights to drive on the beach and any activities like that (going off road in places you are not supposed to) risks our ability to enjoy the beach.
I thought that was the area around Mansfield Channel and true that is one that is dicey concerning how far you can go back legally.
I would certainly not condone anyone boycotting your business. Most of us thought it looked more like a "Hey, let's see if we can get her stuck kind of deals" without regard to the rules on PINS. There have been many incidents in recent months concerning trucks tearing up the dunes and this has most of us ready to pounce on those who do for fear they will close the beach to driving for that very reason.
Obviously you understand the rules now and I appreciate you explaining what went on.
Thanks!
