| Does anyone know why this city would not want Bass Pro Shops? I believe I heard on the news last night that they didn't want them to build on the bay front. |

From what I got from the news last nite the city does want the Bass Pro Shop. They want them to either rent or buy Memorial Colosseum. The people that don't want it are there competition, business like Academy, Gulf Coast Marine, etc. According to the news these are the people that have posted the billboards around town stating that the city is going to give Bass Pro a tax break to move into Corpus Christi. Sound like alot of politics to me. Oh well I'm pretty sure that will be another business that
won't be comming to Corpus Christi.

Cities and states often give tax breaks to companies to come to their cities. They make it up by increased sales tax revenues and increase in jobs and other revenue generated by shipping and things like that. It is very common and often when cities fight for large corporations it plays a big role as some companies get tax breaks for a very long time period, 20-30 years. _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |

It can be a double edge sword too. For instance, the city of Round Rock did a deal with Dell to rebate property taxes because they knew they would get the city sales tax from every Dell purchase for the state of Texas. Right now Round Rock is funded 60% by that sales tax. In the current legislature, in order to reduce property taxes, shipped orders will be taxed according to their Texas destination and Dell will collect & send taxes to every local govt in Texas. Round Rock is going to lose that tax base and the rebate/reduced property tax agreement with Dell in still in effect.
The city of Austin has been fighting this battle forever as have many small towns when WalMart comes to town. Small businesses can not compete. And for all the jobs and taxes they do bring, how many jobs are lost and how much of that profit stays in the community. At least small local businesses keep every penny in the local economy where as the big boxes send it to corporate offices elsewhere.
Personally, I think local govts miss the big picture. They always want to do these deals for big box retailers which in my mind is just a switch out in jobs. I think they should offer incentives to local businesses especially retailers and big incentives to new industry, manufacturing, wholesalers, etc. that bring in both taxes and jobs without shutting down the locals. This helps everyone by increasing jobs and the need for services from local companies.
To me it ain't rocket science... _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |

I agree also and I still wish Bass Pro Shops would have purchased the center downtown, is another museum what we needed? _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |

| Ok. Thanks for clearing it up. I think a Bass Pro Shop would be great for that location. The Colosseum is such an eye sore for the bay front. What an upgrade to have them in it's place. |

Can't blame them. That building is falling apart from years of wear and tear and poor maintenance, not to mention the punishment of salt air. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

I know that it is a memorial so perhaps there is something they can create to honor those if they demolish it. Frankly it looks to me like a brick quonset hut.
I don't think you can attract a Bass Pro by telling them what they have to use for their facility. |

I think a nice pavillion would be a great way to honor those which the Memorial Coliseum was built to honor, and much nicer.
I think letting the M. C. become such an eyesore is dishonoring those who fought for our country.
And there is no doubt that telling Bass Pro what their building should be is no way to get them down here. Especially when you consider the cost to renovate and maintain an old building such as the M.C. A new building would be a much cheaper way to go and a more attractive building. |

I understood that Bass Pro assessed the Coliseum and determined that it would be too costly for them to renovate the bldg. for their needs. I would also guess that they determined that the strong fuss (some businesses, "old money", other) wasn't worth it to locate it there.
The market for their products and services is probably high here in Corpus being a coastal community. So, I would guess that they would be breaking ground on a new location by mid-late summer. _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today
