I am having a rod repaired and modified at the Breakaway shop and I want to put a nice reel on it that I can hum a big chunk of meat out there with, because kayaking is tiresome and I dread reeling in my big rigs to see the bait is untouched. I told nick I had a 3/0 penn and he told me to get it magged. What is magged? And for a fairly large Shimano Calcutta that can throw bait or big lures, does it need to be magged? Any reply is appreciated.

It means to add magnets to slow down the reel's spool when casting, this helps prevent backlashes. I would think a shimano calcutta does not need to be magged as it has brakes on it all ready.

The Calcutta 400 & 700 models have both friction (spool pin tension) and centrifugal brakes. The large silver knob on the handle side adjusts the spool pin tension, and the centrifugal brakes are adjusted by selecting how many brake friction pins are engaged under the opposide side cover. Usually (for me) two pins active are satisfactory.

do the magnets go on the inside or outside of the reel??

there are rare earth magnets which are all the rage, little more expensive. but yes you can get different types.

On the Discovery channel they were showing how rare earth magnets have been largely responsible for the reduction in the size of all our little electonic gadgets. Because they are 50 to 100 times as strong as ferite (iron) magnets, they can do more with less. Very interesting stuff.

As techniques and material mix optimization continue to increase the strength of rare earth magnets they will continue to get smaller.

So don't take the little magnets off of your refrigerator stick-ups and put them in your reel. They won't help at all. But a rare earth magnet in the same size will do nicely. If they used REMs in the little animals and things you put on your fridge, it would be really, really hard to get them off.

Where can i purchase these magnets. I have a 4/0 penn and i can not cast it without geting backlash... Would it be a good idea to mag it???????????? Please help.. Its a brand new reel and i cant even cast the darn thing Sad

you need to tighten your brakes or learn the back cast for heavier weights. see the breakaway shop for instructional videos on how to cast. if it needs to be magged oz or nick will hook you up.

Torpedo hit the nail on the head with that Alamoanglers web site, good stuff.
I just got back from Hobbylobby and picked up some real small magnets called power magnets 10 for $3.00. Real strong. Also, Hatteras Outfitters
is coming out with a mag. kit for $30 around May. It has a knob or slider to control the strength of the magnetic field. Also, do some googling on reel tuning. You'd be surprised of all the ways there are to change your reels performance. A heavier bearing oil will make bigger reels fluff up less.

i found some rare earth magnets at radioshack.com ... are those the right magnets to use... I really want to do this to my 4/0 senetor but am really scared on how many magnets to use.. I am 30lb mono and ona 10'5 rod usally using a 3 to 4 oz weight.. any ideas!!!!
