I would not charge anybody for any help I give. No matter what the problem. If I had to buy a part for their vehicle then I would expect them to pay for the part. I got stuck a couple weeks ago and 2 guys stopped and pulled me out, they did not ask for money and I did not offer them any. I just thanked them for the help and I will do the same for anybody I can.
If a person is so hard up or greedy that he has to stick it to somebody that needs help then maybe he should get another job. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

I have done it but those of us who have seen too many people stuck from doing stupid things sometimes we let them call a wrecker. Example some guy was driving wreckelessly spinning around fast and doing donuts in the soft sand at the Sticks. I am not going to risk my transmission to help someone out who is doing something stupid. I did however help a couple who drove their Caprice Classic into the wade gut so the wife could rinse her feet off to keep from getting sand in the car. I took me and an F250 to pull it out. The tide was coming in fast and my truck could not get it out. That was ignorance and they were about to have a lot more damage than to paying for a tow truck.
Many including me think it is irresponsible for those with two wheel drive to go south of the 4 wheel drive only sign on PINS and expect people to pull them out.
If you do venture south in 2 wheel drive I would recommend that you travel with buddies who are willing to pull you out.
Of course we always help out those with mechanical or other problems (or those as mentioned even though ignorant in danger of losing their vehicle to an incoming tide) either to get a lift back to town or to call for help etc.
I have never charged anybody anything and I don't think Nickaway or anybody else has either.
Here is an example of a two wheeler in forbidden territory "The Cadillac at the 50 mile mark"
This person knew what to do and had the sense to go in and come back on a very low tide. |

I've always helped people that are stuck if I can, you never now wen you yourself will need help. I had a friend that was a wreker driver tell me it is illeagal to charge somebody to get them out, because of having to be registard with TX D.O.T. as doing any type of recovery. _________________ there is never a bad day of fishing... some are just better than others!!! |

I would never charge someone if they needed some help. I would expect them pay it forward, and help someone else if they see someone in distress. When you are pushing your vehicle to the limits out there on PINS to get down the beach, eventually everyone will get stuck sooner or later. I haven't had it happen yet. But we have done it so many times way down south of the four wheel drive only sign where those in two wheel drive only should not be. The last time we helped a guy at Port Mansfield in a two wheel drive truck who was stuck. The guy was running low on gas and Nick Meyer pulled him out and the guy asks "how close is the nearest gas station? Nick told him "75 miles north up the beach, mate" Then he got stuck again coming down the soft sand right by the jetty and Nicky pulled him out again and we told him that a wrecker called down there would charge the usual 60 dollars then 30 dollars for each mile they traveled to get you. So let's see 62 miles x 30 dollars a mile plus the 60 wrecker service is a ton of money.
Then we told him to run low and stay close to the water. Well, on my way back with Skipper (kind hearted president of the SFCCI. www.sffci.org) we see the guy stuck at the 39 up near the dunes. I told Skipper we warned the guy and he pulled him out and told him to stay close to the water. Skipper's wife Karen then told him how much a wrecker costs down there and said to pay attention next time. He said he wanted to see what was in that Yellow locker the Turtle Patrol had up near the dunes. Then we found him stuck at the 25 in a soft spot close to the water and Skipper pulled him out again! I would too since the tide was coming in and he was at least doing as we directed the first time we pulled him out. Then we fished some more and ran into him out of gas at the two mile mark Skipper then towed him back to the now demolished Circle K at Whitecap. So you see there are times like that when people go off wrecklessly that puts unneeded risk to those pulling him out. For example the one time Nick pulled a guy out at the sticks whose Jeep was stuck in the soft 3 foot pile of sargassum and was beginning to take water close to the hood. The rope snapped and broke Nick's window in his camper shell. The last time I tried to pull a guy out I specifically told him to loop my tow rope around something in front rather than tie the strap off because you can never undo the knot. Well he tied it off and it cost me a 25 dollar tow strap.
I always help folks too but you can understand my frustration with people doing things that they should not be doing and expect good samaritans to risk breaking windows, transmissions, etc due to their carelessness.

Good point there TT.
I am a kind hearted person by nature, but I would have left the guy at the Turle Shack. I might have offered him a phone call on my cell phone to call a tow truck. He was low on gas, warned about the tow cost, and given good adive to hang low near the tide line, after being pulled out two times already!
That is just wrecklessness in that case, pure and simple.
By the way, love the pick of the Cadi down PINS. Cracks me up. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Don't get me wrong, I always help. The guys I did not help that did the donuts and got stuck had somebody pull them out before I got through with fishing. I probably would have done it but first I would have them lower their tire pressure to 20 to see if they could make it out on their own.
With my little 6 cylinder, and not much torque I don't have the oomph to pull most people out anyway if they are really stuck.
I almost had to have a tow out that one day my tranny finally gave up the ghost in the high banks. I managed to limp back from the 25 to my folks house never going over 19mph. Once I got past 19 it went into neutral and then I called a wrecker from there.

I never charge them, I tow them out, take pics, then post them on the web for everybody to......errrr, learn a lesson, yeah, that's it!, LOL!...........Kyle
BTW, That's me in the black truck. Don't remember who that is in the Dodge. Allthough, that suits him cause he's Dodging eflak now,LOL! J/K
Who is that guy in the white hat??? He's the stranger that we all love and miss.
Allthough, some people are so freakin stupid. last summer i wanted to help some idiot in a 2wd toyota car that was stuck in the 20s, and wanted to go back the same way he came...through the deepest sand you've seen. I can't believe he made it there in the first place. Low tide was fine, but he insisted on going back into the 2' deep sand, uphill! I finally got sick of his crap and drove over onto the lowtide area and told him this was his last chance. Go my way or stay. Well, he went my way and made it back, LOL! Some people amaze me???. There was no charge,( had I seen him again, he'd a stayed)............Kyle _________________ I fish, therefore, I am................Happy! |

| Oz has some pics of a drunk woman in a minivan stuck at the 22mm. She dug sand for a while till Moose went over and helped her. She was mad the whole time acting like he charged her something (he didnt) and telling me "I hope yall are happy! I bet yall make a living doing this!" real mean like. I finally had to ask her to get out of the van and let me do it. We got her out and set her up pointing the right direction past all of the rods and Moose's yak not wanting to take any chances. Well she was about 75 yards up the beach still standing where she was stuck at. I walked back to her and told her she would have to walk down there and she got even more pissed, cussed me and told me her 16 y/o daughter was in to witchcraft and something bad was going to happen to us and she knows some good spells. By far the weirdest thing I have seen on the beach yet. Maybe Oz will post up a couple of the pics. |
