Matt Palmtag, J.D. Arnold, Jay Gardner and I headed out to some wrecks and shrimper "hangs" offshore on November 7, 2004. We were aboard Matt's boat, the She & I.

After a pretty rough ride (3-4 footers coming from various directions), we anchored up on a few wrecks until we found one that held some fish. After a little chumming, we caught 15 sow grey (or dog) snapper, 2 gag grouper, and a mess of pesky triggers. The snapper hit every bait sent down, live or dead (bonita chunks, mackeral, menhaden, squid, shrimper chum, etc.). We also caught a bunch of red snapper (smallish-16 to 22 inches), which we had to release. No keeper ling, although Matt caught one a little undersized.

One thing we have found that helps is to downsize your terminal tackle, as the snapper are picky. They would not hit 200 pound mono, but would always hit 80-130#. Same deal with the smaller (circle or J) hooks.

Each wreck we hit had at least 2 big porpoises cruising around picking off the weak. They always know where the food is.

Great catch Scott, sure looked like a good weekend to be offshore. Wish thay would do something about changing the Snapper season where it was open during the winter months and closed during the summer when we have other fish to catch.

Thanks guys.

That would be the best way to deal with the snapper season. I feel bad for the winter Texans who snapper fished the winters for years before the closure.
