With the way the weather has been and the predicted low tides, Randy, Greg and I (SportFisher) decided to do a day trip to PINS.

We left SA several hours before sunrise and arrived on the sand at 7am to smooth driving and 2 to 3 footers….just a great day to be on the beach.

Drove down to the 21mm in record time…driving the posted speed limit of course. Not much happening in the wade gut..managed a couple of Whiting and Greg hooked up with a 14in Sheephead or Black Drum(released).

Decided to move on to the 25mm, where Randy hooked up with his first ever Redfish (18” Released).

Decided to put a couple of lines over the first bar and I landed the first of my 3 Pompano for the day.

Things slowed down and we moved further South.

Stopped to talk to Curmit and Henry R., they had just started fishing and landed a couple of Pompano and some whiting. They also had someone in a wetsuit to run out their Shark Baits (the water was pretty darn cold!). Nice meeting you guys and I hope you guys hooked up with something nice!

We moved about 3/4m down to around the 28mm and was able to put a few more Whiting in the cooler. Off in the distance we saw something floating our way and when it reached the wade gut, we decided to check it out. It was a black plastic drum with some interesting stickers and writing on it. It only had what felt like a gallon or two of liquid in it, but we thought it would be best to leave it sealed.

Decided to start fishing our way North and finally ended up around the 12mm where we started to slay the Whiting. Finally packed it up about 4pm for our trip back to SA.

It was an awesome time on the beach….driving was the best I have seen in some time, water was green and surf wasn’t too bad. Even ended up with a little too much sun, but that’s better than the alternative. We ended up with 3 Pompano and about 10 nice whiting. All fish were caught on dead shrimp and Pompano were all caught just over the first bar. Didn’t get the Reds we were looking for, but as long as we are still able to drive the beach, there will be many PINS trips in the future.

Nice report, sounds like a good day! I wonder what that drum was all about???

Assuming that first photo is of Greg, he's holding a juvenile black drum, not a sheepshead.

Best to stay at a distance from the other kind of black drum in your pix.

Yep, that's a juvy balck drum all right. One day it will go up to be a big ugly!

MIGHT BE ANTIMICROBIAL HANDSOAP IN THE BARREL.

Could be anthrax, could be drugs, etc. The gov't pays good money for a crew to overpack such containers and haul them away. Then, someone using a moon suit gets paid the big bucks to find out what's inside. Shocked

You wouldn't open a suspicious email attachment, so why take a chance with a big black barrel? Even if you'd take the risk, the rest of us wouldn't care to find its contents spilled on the beach after you'd keeled over. Crying or Very sad

Report drums and similar containers to the rangers and stick to the fishing.

Those fish looked fine; wish I'd caught them. Smile

We left it sealed for our (your) protection. Didn't stop by the ranger station, but when we stopped at the visitor's center, the rangers were busy cuffing an older Gentleman for DWI Shocked

somebody must have reported him, because one ranger pulled up in front of him and the other behind. I guess it didn't help that they pulled a half (large) bottle of vodka out of the car.

I thought for sure the barrel was from our friends in Louisiana, but the address was a TX address.

Call the TECQ(Texas Comission on Environmental Quality) 512-239-1000 or report it at www.tceq.state.tx.us/ They investigate anything that is harmful to the enviroment that deals with water.
