| Can anyone tell me if there is a cell phone that will pick-up clear reception past the 25 MM at PINS? I occassionally fish the surf at PINS with some friends with their cell phones from different sources but haven't seen one that works out there. |

If you have a 3 watt booster and a external antenna you can get a weak signal just about the full length of the beach. Particularly if you get close to the dunes. Signal gets very good near the Cut starting about 55 miles down.
Some times you can get a signal by climbing up on a high dune with a just the your handheld.
Best phone is a old bag phone with 5 watts. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

| Flakman is right about the dunes, I've been able to get a signal all the way to the jetties. I have Sprint PCS and a Nokia phone. |

| Same here. Up on the dunes unless you're close to the cut. I have AT&T. |

Do a google on your phone manufacture or "Cell Phone Accessories" and see if you can hook up an external antenna to your phone. I currently don't have one but several people have them and swear that you can use your phone almost anywhere on the beach with the extra antenna. They come as through the glass and clip on.
Might be worth a look. _________________ Magic |

Have an old sbc bag phone. It is a true cell, not digital. Very powerful signal since this is a full 5 watt phone. Problem is it's not really very portable, since the darn thing is about 12"x6"x4". Almost impossible to find an area on PINS where I can't get reception. If reception gets weak, just drive up towards the dunes and I can get out. Did get a supprise one time. My bill came in with roaming charges from New Orleans. Apparently a New Orleans cell tower picked up my call. Now for even more bad news a friend of mine contracts sites for phone towers and says no one is putting up true cell towers anymore, only digital. In fact, carriers are shutting down cell towers due to lack of demand. So, looks like I'll have to get rid of my old friend & get a digital and live with the limited service area.
