Bill, maybe you know something about a spot for the reds. What I have seen is that the reds and other fish are concentrated in the surf - that area outside the surf - like 1/2 mile on out, there is no structure or reason for the fish to be there, other than chasing their next meal.
When I have kayaked out in that area, you just don't see that much fish traffic out there except around schools, it reminds you of a desert, just not much action compared to the surf and then just off shore from the surf. Once you get to around the rigs, then you are talking action, but not redfish. |

If every place is dead then how do the fish get to the rigs _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

You must be swedish. I don't know who said 'every place is dead'. Fish congregate around things that attract what they eat, so do I. I hang around fastfood places, restaurants and grocery stores. Fish hang around places that hold things they like to eat, like the shore, with the surf that stirs up the bottom, or rigs , or wrecks, or piers. But again, in my limited time around rigs, I have never seen or caught a red around one.
A clue is to listen to what the guides do, these guys/gals work the shallows around structures in the flats, or even better hire these guys. |

Me and Michael Elbert caught several redfish around the close in rigs a couple months ago, mixed in with some nice snapper, and some fish that kept beaking us off.
So there are reds out there, but I don't know about thsi time of year, with the cooler water temps. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

I have not fished the nearshore platforms off PINS in winter but have fished the platforms off Matagorda. These platforms are loaded up with bull reds. Just soak some cut mullet and hang on. Occasionally you get one <28" worth keeping but most are over 40". I once caught a 25" spec on one of these platforms soaking cut mullet. _________________ Ahh sand between my toes! |

Where are you from and where are you going to fish? If you live near Houston or Galveston I would suggest fishing at High Island. If you go to texaskayakfisherman.com and look at the fishing report, you will see tkfer's catching them out at approximately 300 to 600 yards from shore.

We very rarely find Redfish off-shore, but last June we caught several out of a mixed school of Red Snapper & Redfish in 150 feet of water about 100 yards from a Production Platform 27 miles north east of Port Mansfield. Like I said, that was a surprize to us because we very rarely catch redfish except around the jetties and in the surf. Would like to know where they hang out.
PS-My buddy in the picture thought he had a redfish on, but it turned out to be a 12 lb. Red Snapper

Don,
Had a good friend who was Swedish. Grew up in Minn. in a primarily Norwegian town. Said it was a tough childhood being the only Sweed around all those Norwegians. Almost every day coming home from school those mean Norwegian kids would throw M-80's and Chery Bombs at him. He would pick 'em up, light 'em and throw 'em back. _________________ Big Ed

| the reason i asked about the bull reds being in the gulf is because i saw a show on the outdoors channel. there were a couple of guides who had gone out about .5 a mile or so out past the surf in alabama , trying to find bull reds. well they did , they were catching one after another. i thought that since the adult redfish migrate out into the gulf this time of year , it would probably be the same all along the south coast. |

| I am married to a swede - swedes love to argue or find something wrong in any statement. I carry a sack of rocks under the seat of my truck for when I get tired of arguing or have to get out to get gas, I hand one to her so she can keep arguing. |

Boy this thread has taken a different turn -- pretty damn funny stuff though; can't wait to read what comes next! _________________ "I don't wanna live on that kind of island, no I don't wanna swim in a roped off sea.
