Chaser, Duane and I headed down to PINS Friday afternoon around 1pm. This was Duane’s first trip to PINS and after all the recent stories about Tarpon, his heart was set on hooking up with one.

We hit the beach about 4:30 and moved down to the 17mm, not much action, but a few skipjack and one 30” Red I was able to bring in right before dark.

We set up camp and talked about all the fish we were going to catch the next day, or so we hoped.

I woke up to the smell of coffee early Saturday morning; Chaser and Duane were ready to hit the surf. We fished the 17 hard and Duane hooked up with his first PINS fish, a 30+ inch Jack. Not the Tarpon he was after, but a fish that really stretched his 15lb line.

Chaser hooked a nice 27” Red

After a few more Skipjack, which could be caught as long as you had a silver spoon in the water, we decided to head on down south. Driving condition were some of the best I have seen on PINS, just a few soft spots, but the recent storms have really flattened the beach. We decided to make camp at the 41mm. We continued to fish with me catching a 27” Red that looked like it had recently had an encounter with one of the toothy critters, I released this one to heal and fight another day.

Duane hooked into his first Ray.

There was plenty of finger mullet in the surf, but we didn’t have any takers. After playing with what seemed like a 100 skipjack, we decided to call it a night to enjoy a great surfside BBQ.

Woke early Sunday morning to some lightening to the Northwest and some rain clouds to the Southeast. We decided we should pack camp and then fish, this would turn out to be a great decision.

We casted up a few finger mullet and Chaser was the first to hit the surf, as he was walking his rod back to the holder his line starts peeling out from his hand. He would eventually land a nice 37” Jack.

Both Chaser’s and my rods take of massive hit, both us get broke off before we could get the fish in. Within the first hour, Duane gets broke off 5 times and Chaser at least twice more. I finally bring in a 34” Jack.

Things slow down and the sky’s begin to darken, just as it begins to rain my finger mullet makes the ultimate sacrifice and I am able to land this 37” Jack.

Just after I release him, the sky’s open up and we are met with a sheet of some of the hardest rain I have ever felt. We decided it was time to pack it up and head North.

We didn’t get the Bull Reds we expected to get, Duane didn’t even see his Tarpon (even though he is claiming that’s what broke him off), but we did end up with 3 nice Reds, 4 Jacks landed, and about 100 Skipjack (10” – 20”). This was a successful trip to PINS and I believe will be a memorable one for the rookie.

I can’t wait to make my next trip in a couple of weeks when I am taking down two more first timers, my Father-in-law and Brother-in law.

See ya on the sand,

Thanks Cliff for being patient on how to get those photos from shutterfly to display.
Looks like you all had a great time with the reds and the jacks.
October can be awesome when it is not raining cats and dogs!

we will be able to get back into them in a couple of weeks. Bringing down my in-laws and would love to have them hook a few. Haven't seen many posts with the bull reds yet.
