What's the best boat out there, and why?

Several scenarios:

First, money is no object and you can buy any boat you want.

Second, on a budget, but can afford a fairly nice one.

Third, broke, but must have a new boat.

Fourth, absolutely can't afford a new boat, so I have to buy a used one from a dealer (for financing purposes).

Also, if you have a bay boat, what kind is it and what do you like and dislike about it? What would you buy if you had it to do over again?

I may buy a used Aluminum Lowe Roughneck because the offer might be too good to pass up, but I'd still like to get a really good 'glass bay boat in the near future.

Chad....I don't think there is a Best Bay Boat out there. I've run them all and they all have the plus and minus factor. I think it all depends on how you fish and what you fish for. There is one bit of advise that I can give you and that is most people under-horsepower their boat. You never know when you might need that extra power to run from a storm or in case of an emergency and besides that extra horsepower will help the resale.

Hells Bay comes to mind. A friend just bought the Laguna Madre Special Edition and it's awesome! Capt. Billy has one and wouldn't sell it for anything. 3.5" water/ runs and floats. 17' long and weighs 700#s, motor and all. The mottor is only 60 hp and does about 40+(not sure), but the milage is great!!!

I just sold my 22' Bay Stealth and I believe it was one of the best all around boats because I could take offshore in the summer. It ran in 14" and was quite heavier, but I said all around. It was more comfortable than the HB, and more room and storage. But you can't beat HB service. They delivered my bud's boat without something he ordered and they sent a mechanic from Fla the next day to take care of him..........Kyle

I have owned several bay boats & they each seem to serve their own purpose, I had a 15' shallow sport that was alot of fun hugging shorelines with, but open water would eat it up, 18' flat bottom shoalwater that re-shuffled my guts, 22' pathfinder which I really liked, but expensive & kinda cluttered & light on cooler space, but I did like way it handled & a livewell that you only dream about. I now own a 21' flats cat & I like it, except hitting chop head on is pretty rough, sideways its great w/ the catamaran hull- just kinda wobbles side to side & eats em' up. the fish ability is great- no clutter & very stable, no livewell though, so I made one out of the console cooler & its not great, but it works, if I had another chance I would probably get a big nosed boat like a pescador or explorer, a friend had a 23' explorer & the ride was smooth as I've seen

Capt. Singleterry knows and gave the correct answer. I have owned three other bay boats and was looking for a good compromise boat for the lagoon, Baffin and the land cut. I finally settled on the Majek 20V with a Yamaha 130, Riptide trolling motor and Lenco tabs. There are specialty boats that will do shallow, rough, hole shot, etc. better than the 20V, but it does all of them well. I couldn't be happier and it is fairly fuel efficient to boot. Have some fun.

I saw a Majek being trailered on 37 yesterday. I was drooling over it. Sweet looking rig, and it looked like it could handle lots of conditions well.

That's what I want. I appreciate the suggestions so far.

Sure, I'd love to have a boat that runs 40mph in 4" of water, handles 12' seas, and can be carried in my hip pocket.

Some people I know at work here own one of the first Majeks ever built, the fouth one, I think, and it still does great for them. They recently had it overhauled and a new Honda outboard installed. They say it floats in the shallows well, and handles rough bay conditions well too.

There is a Majek Extreme for sale in Odem. The color is blue and white. I have fished out of an Extreme many times and is what I will get in the next few years.

I've had mine in the back of Matagorda Island drifting in 6-7 inches. It'll run in 5 1/2 (not 5, trust me!) I've also had the boat out to 35 nm. She's caught trout, reds, jacks, flounder, spanny macs, kings, red snaps, grouper, Aj's, dorado, tripletail. I'm powered by a 225 opti. If $ was no object I'd have a Verado 275 on the back.

Have you ever ridden in rough waters in a Majek? I've been in several and they'll beat you up in rough water. Just cann't get a flat hull to ride well in the chop. There is no one best bay boat cause all the bays are different. What works well at POC doesn't in Corpus bay for example. Buy what you want for what you do.

....Here is a little advise that might help once you figure out how and what you want to do.(your on the right track) Most of the boat dealerships
in this area will give you rides in the boats you have an intrest in. Alot of the dealerships work very close with "their" guides and can and will set up
a boat ride. All you need to do is ask.
