Here's a loaded question. If you could bring only 1 rod, 1 reel, 1 live bait/tackle setup (line, leader, weights, hook, bait etc...), and 1 artificial lure to go fishing the surf on PINS, what would you bring?
Now I shall sit back and watch everyone's head explode as they try and pick just one. _________________ "Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink-- under any circumstances." -Mark Twain

wow, only one? prolly (7ft rd on 12lb test) just the Curado with a silver spoon....but would be in the kayak, you said just one rod/reel but nothing about other tools.....kinda hard when the 1st thing you break out is the cast-net. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

Clip-down pulley rig w/210# steel leader and 14/0 mustad circle hook

I'll bite on this one.
7' Shimano Strata light/med action combo - $69 at Roy's
30lb power-pro braid - $15 at Roy's
40lb mono shock leader - $2 at Academy
3/4 johnson sprite silver spoon - $2 at Academy
A self tied 100lb mono leader with 6-0 diachi circle hook and a 4-0 straight shank J hook - $5 supplies from Roy's
4oz breakaway surf weight - $2 at Walmart
package of white fishbites - $4.95 at Roy's
Grand total = $98 + tax
Then I can catch everything from whiting for bait to a 4' blacktip! _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

The same thing I use anywhere I go, works for everything from small hardheads to 41 in reds
ambassador 5500c
7 ft medium heavy ugly stick
20 lb trilene
50 lb mono leader
5 oz spider weight (just incase the current is real bad)
shrimp (you can always use them to catch other live bait or cut bait)
gold spoon
#5 regular hook (brand doesn't matter to me)
Many people will read this and probably think I'm Mr. Cheap and your right, I am cheap. I haven't caught a fish yet that told me "nice set up dude" or "where did you get that reel" and I have caught my share of over sized fish on this set up and can go from bait to lures with the opening of a swivel. My wife uses the same thing and for some reason she always hooks up with huge stingrays on PINS. She gets them in everytime and has caught several sharks in the 3 to 4 foot range. I read stories about someone taking 15 minutes to reel in a 26 inch red with a $300 set up while it took me less than 3 minutes in the surf to reel in a 41.5 inch red with a set up that cost less than $100. For those of you that can afford the more expensive items by all means if that is what you like to use then go for it. As I look around though it seems there are some "fisherpeople" that have gone to the image thing or the keeping up with the Jones while trying to fish. It amazes me how many people are wearing colombia shirts as everyday going out on the town clothing. I welcome all comments and no hard feelings will come from me as I realize I am cheap. _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |

Amen, Mastergunner,
I've always believed that you don't need a fancy schmancy (my own new word) rod/reel combo to catch fish. If I were depending on my survival, I'd rather befriend Billy Sandifer with a Academy $30 special than a self proclaimed know it all with a St. Croix and high dollar tackle.
When you can find the fish, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the high dollar and low end stuff. You will catch them regardless. Now, if you are plugging away with arties for 8 hours, you will want an extremely light rod with a perfectly balanced reel. But most of us only fish for an hour or so at a time on the beach. Alot of us are using baitcasting rods that require at most an observant glance at a dipping rod tip.
A friend of mine (Cliff....aka Sportfisher) caught a 5 1/2 foot blacktip on his first or second trip to PINS using a $35 Academy rod/reel special. He didn't even yak out a bait, as he didn't have a yak at the time...it was a casted rod. I have still not brought in a shark like that while using a Penn 9/0, O.K. kayak, full-on shark rig, etc. From what I've seen, it's all about timing and structure observance.
To this day, my biggest black drum (24 inches) and redfish (29.5 inches) have come off of my $30.00 Academy spinning rig that I named "White Lightning". The drum came from PINS near the Mansfiled jetties. The red came from Wilson's Cut.
For the past two years, I have been using a Breakaway 10' rod attached to a Penn 525 mag. Since I have been casting this setup, I haven't really used White Lightning since. The Breakaway rod is SOOOOO much lighter, stiffer, and all around a better performer than my cheap rod. I have caught many fish with it, including a good pompano haul last November. Now that I am accustomed to the fine handling of a better quality made rod, I use it first before anything else because of its better casting ability. However, I still believe that knowledge of beach structure is more important than the tools used in the catch.
Well... I totally went off the subject there. Sorry. If I had only one rig to use, I would probably fish with a 7 foot rod (spinning cause I suck at baitcasting) using 12lb test and a 2ft 20lb test leader connected to a Mr. Champ (Kastmaster) silver spoon.

Good Question
First let me say that going down PINS with only 1 rig strikes me as a major waste of time and money, even though I'd do it if I had to
Carefully thinking this out for a while, I decided on a set up that I feel will let me fish all day and into the night...i hope
I'd use and Ambassadeur 6500c spooled with 20# big game line
I'd use an all star 7'6" fast taper/medium heavy action flipping rod...this would give me the ability to cast and have the backbone to fight good sized fish.
I'd pick about a 3oz. spider weight, a slider and some 50# big game for a leader and a 1 or 1/0 treble hook for soaking bait...assuming I can catch bait with my cast net
for my one lure I'd go with either a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce gold spoon
Now I can go rack my brain some more....thanks alot |

Jarvis Walker 700, that Seabass was talking about. Until now, I have always used cheaper brands of equipment. I have had exceptional luck (I'm hoping some is skill) on PINS. My most expensive setup is a Penn 535 on a Tica 11' casting rod.
Now that I have a kayak, I've invested in a couple of 6/0's with boat rods.
Still, I like my coastal ugly stick, spining reel with 20lb big game. Need some Walmart shrimp (2lb bag), fishbites and a 1/2oz silver Sprite spoon. Man, I can already taste the redfish on the halfshell!!!
See ya on the sand,

Wow! less than 3 minutes. It never made a run? Took me at least 7 maybe 10 to get a 42"er on 25# line and thats cause the drag was really on it. Some fish are stronger than others.
LOL Your not all that cheap as you think mastergunner. My dad thinks an ambassdeur is a high dollar reel. He would never buy Trilene or any name brand line and would never spend more than $20 on a rod. But the guy always seems to out fish me. Dont matter if im using custom gear and he has the academy special LOL. Skill and luck thats all that matters. |

My wife has a zebco 33 that she has had for about 30 years, caught lots of big fish out of ponds and creeks. _________________ Hardheads should be the state fish of Texas |
