Hi everybody. Hope y'all's lives are going smoother than things are around here. Being a fishing guide is another word for unemployed as of late. Several others and I have been talking and I want to run an idea by you. Several years back Nick Meyer conned lots of beach fishermen into putting cb radios in their vehicles. It worked. We could get lots of good information from each other and check on conditions and catches up and down the length of the beach. It wasn't uncommon for me to reach someone 20 miles or more away on the beach and if a serious situation came up we could get word to PINS or other law enforcement/rescue personnel when someone farther to the North picked up our transmission and could let them know. While planning on this upcoming Big Shell Beach Cleanup Ace Leal and I got to talking about how helpful it would be if we had cb radios. Especially since many of us still have ours and they are cheap at flea markets. At recent meetings I've had with the feds they advised me that they are trying to reach a solution to our lack of communication down the beach and I believe they will; sooner or later but in the mean time those cbs would sure be an upgrade from nothing; which is what we have now. What do y'all think? Capt. Billy

cb's are great but tied to the vehicle.. .
alot of these 2 way radios have pretty good reception and distance.. line of site good 20miles.. havent picked up any yet, but been looking at the motorola and the midland 40 some odd channels. NOAA scanners also... wonder if an emergency channel can be set up or something kinda universal, because the headquarters can set up a booster/repeater antenna and possibly at the turtle shack.. for 50-100 bucks for a set of 2-4 good ones.. waterproof/resistant..car chargers,etc.. might not be bad option to look at.. .. and now the digital ones are out but not sure on the distance and like 1billion channels.. ((( Rolling Eyes what channel was that 348,951,722... no.. keep going.. Razz ).

Channel 1 was also Nick's idea. He said if we picked any other channel the Frog Hunters wouldn't be able to remember which one it was. Billy

How many other hams do we have here? Maybe we can a daily HF net, similar to the boat/maritime nets. Email me here if you're interested. I'll probably also add a CB to the truck soon too as it isn't legal to use my rig on the cb bands.

do the feds even care about CB traffic anymore?
I remember when CB required a lic., but that was waay back. we never had a lic. in the '80s.
some truckers back then had radios that would dead key several hundred watts and swing to over 1200w.

Got 2 but have not used them in a long time. May have to check and see if they still work.

Hey has any one thought of using a cell phone? Laughing
OK,.. .lets call Verizon and get on TV and find them people that make sure signal works.. we can text and push to talk and all that kind of good stuff.. lets exchange numbers..

yeah right..

does any one know if the hand helds also work with the cb's.. i use to have a set of midland's back in the 80's that would pick up and communicate with cb's.. we use to use them down at the beach and driving down, but were only good for 1mile or less, probably less. kids messing with truckers.. Twisted Evil

Depends on how far down you are, but sometimes if you hike west of the dunes Idea you can get a signal on cell phones. It varies.

Radio waves can only travel "line-of-sight" due to the curvature of the earth, you tend to lose the horizon at approx 10 to 12 miles. The handhelds that advertise 20+ plus miles are blowing smoke. More than likely they get around this claim by putting you in the middle of a 20 mile circle, thereby 10 miles each way. The only way to increase your range without a "skip" is by gaining elevation. Most of us do this by climbing a dune and at least getting a roaming signal on our cell phones. In the old days we would get increased coverage by grounding our truck in the surf using the Gulf as our very own dish antenna , we once talked to Iceland that way. The most effective and durable set-up is one of those extra long stainless steel wire whips. Channel one is the way to go for fishing info and in case of an emergency the signal can be relayed to a land line on other channels.Just my .02. Anyone needing help PM me I'll try and help.
