There are 100 and 1 people that use this computer, but it works pretty good most of the time.

I turned screen on the other day and it said I had all sorts of viruses. 14 or 15 I think. What bothered me was I was able to click on the "X" in each window and shut it down.

Let me try this way, window appears giving me option of yes or cancel. I choose to click on the "X" and it closes.

Now, I do not know if it is advertising or legitimate.

Is there anything out there I can use without having to go buy something for scanning, detecting, and removing viruses? One site said to use AVG and TrendMirco Housecall. I figured I would check here first.

Now, I know there bound to be someone in here. Where is Big John when you need him?

I did incorporate CCleaner today, and it really did a number.

Not fishing per say, but what would I do if computer crashed and I could not get my corpusfishing daily fix?

Thanks for the help.

Gib, not expert by any means, but, here is what I use and I don't get anything on here I can't get rid of or that it tells that something is up.

First AVG Free version is great. Zone Alarm. Ad-Aware free version. Now this one will find anything and everything.

http://www.esoft.web.id/utilities/free-download-windows-vulnerability-scanner-1-24.html

Trend Micro is good too.

Hope this helps. Someone on here will know a lot more then me.

Here's some no-cost software to help clean your system that I've used before at home and work. Don't run more than one anti-virus at a time though as they don't always share the machine well with each other.

For Viruses:
AVG Antivirus (http://free.avg.com/),
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/)

For spyware/malware/adware:
Malware AntiBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/),
Lavasoft AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php)
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)

If you have to be 100% confident you have a machine that is completely virus/spyware/malware free, if it has ever been infected, you must totally wipe the hard drive(s). After this you will have to re-install everything including windows, your programs, and your saved files. As you might imagine, this is a royal pain in the butt and will also likely break any DRM-encoded media files you have (forcing you to re-authorize and in some cases re-purchase them). Most people won't have to go to this sort of extreme. If you need to do this, a good utility to totally irrecoverably wipe a drive is http://dban.sourceforge.net Beware as this will render any data on a drive completely irrecoverable.

As an alternative, you can run a Live CD version of Linux. This runs 100% from the cdrom and doesn't require you to install anything on the hard drive. Even if you have a virus-laden system, booting off a liveCD will cause the system to ignore what is on the hard drive. I like Fedora Live for this.

Mike I don't know who youre service provider is. ATT, Time Warner, etc... Most of them have free anti-virus software. Generally it's pretty good but you have to download it. It's not an automatic thing they do. Surf your home page for you features and you'll probably find it. Download it and see if it helps.

Is it the Real AV Virus? Little red X in the lower right corner of your screen?

Nastty Bug if it is. Its a Gen X Virus, not the common cold. Norton and Kerspersky dont do anything about this one.

Microsoft is allegedly sueing the creator of this one. One of my clients is Microsoft Certified, and was explaining how many calls he is getting in regard to this new form of Virus, also called a browser Virus

I am not even sure I have a virus.

I will try some of the suggestions.

I assume it is okay to download a anti-virus program and a adware removal, but just not to run them at same time. Is this correct?

Thanks again.

I have been running AVG free for several years. It auto updates, checks emails, and runs in the background using little resources. It consistantly is one of the top ten downloads from download.com (thats where you can get it). You might also check out the rest of the top 10. You will find the most popular spyware and adware programs listed and available for download.

Another website everyone might be interested in is: http://www.techsupportalert.com/
This guy reviews freeware of all types and gives you a list of which one are the best in multiple categories such as:

Cleanup & Tuning
Disk & File Tools
Image View & Edit
Internet & eMail

Security: Anti Virus, Adware, Firewall, Intrusion Prevention and more

Lookup & Cataloging: CD, DVD, File and Software Cataloging and more...

And many more other categories. Take a look around and you will be amazed at the free programs available.

You can actively run them at the same time. That is you can be actually running scans with them at the same time. I typically run one antivirus and 7 or 8 adware, spyware, and registry cleaners at the same time.

What you don't want is for a couple of antivirus programs to autoload themselves at startup and run in the background. This can cause problems. I suggest you use only one anti virus program as they tend to auto load. I would not let any spyware or adware program autoload. You can simply actively run them once or twice a month.

It's fine to have a AV and adware removal program together, even running concurrently, but you may run into trouble though if you run two separate AV products at the same time.

I also liked the suggestion about seeing if your ISP offers some antivirus software as they have a vested interest in keeping their users clean.

I highly recommend installing Mozilla Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com then adding the Adblock-plus extension for it. This will remove about 95-98% of all online advertising and make your web browsing experience much, much different. The other must-have extension for firefox is called "no-script" which allows you to selectively turn on features only for sites you trust.

I pity people running naked Internet Exploder.

Avast! Home Version is free A/V. They are very quick to define new viruses.

Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Windows Defender are pretty good at finding adware & malware. All are free.

Gib,

Beware of what is called "Rogue Anti-Virus" products. Some of them do nothing at all. Some of them are actually downloaders for future use by miscreants. Most of them do a scan but report bogus results and prompt you to buy an upgraded version to fix your problems. They will pop-up windows that look like MS Windows Netsend messages. They will give you info clouds from your taskbar telling you have infections & porn on your machine. STAY AWAY FROM THESE!!!!

They will be named things like AntiVirus2009, RegistryCleanerXP, AntiVirusXP, etc.

And stay away from FinallyFast.com!!!!!!!!!! They may be legit but their marketing practices are awful.

Stick with the products these folks have suggested and you will be protected. Also, I can NOT stress enough to use FireFox with NoScript installed. It really does stop a lot of bad stuff before it ever gets a chance to get to you.

Thank you to everyone for your help. I am running strong.

Apparently my virus messages were bogus as AV detected some trojan advertising but nothing in the seek and destroy computer category.

I was also led to CCleaner which is a free product and it does a really nice job of cleaning the computer.

I put on AV and CCleaner. I guess now I need to look into a spyware detector, but I was under impression that AV does this along with checking your email and a host of other things.
