Can anyone tell me where to find some to collect myself? I do have a kayak. Don't need many.

Here's a link to a map that shows which areas are open for oystering. Unfortunately the area off 361 between Aransas Pass and the ferry landing is closed.

Not pertaining to your question but does any one know where to get fresh oysters by the gallon. I used to buy some a while back that came from maybe galvaston area they where huge almond colored not the small greyish ones. I know galveston is out of the question because of the hurricane.Just checking for any info! Cool

Can anybody tell me how to catch oysters. Do you
use a casnet or what? What can you do with oysters?
Do you use them for bait?

Bought a sack from Alby's on Saturday and they were small! We are going to wait a month and try again, there's nothing like BBQ'd oysters

Most Oysters along the gulf coast are harvested by hard working commercial fishermen during the colder months of the year. Most use the same boat as used for shrimping the just remove the nets and shrimping gear and replace it with an oyster dredge...sorts like a bucket that scoops the bottom were the oysters live it picks up the oysters , the bucket is full of holes and such to let the mud and water drain out. Oyster are usually taken during the months with r's in them. You can see oyster boats at the Fulton harbour just past Rockport. As for bait , I personally have never had an oyster make it to a hook for bait, they almost always end up on the end of a fork covered in redsauce. mmmmmm goooooood. Very Happy

Don't know of use for bait, but there's the possibility of shucking and salting them. I've been meaning to try that just to see how they'd stay on a hook.

But I wouldn't use a cast net. Oyster shells are hard on just about anything, but especially on nets. Just pick them up when you find them.
You could also pick them up with crab tongs, I suppose.

You should be able to see what you collect by hand. Use a fish glove to protect your hands. Those sharp shell edges can cut you like a knife. Use a welding hammer or something similar to cull the dead shells away from the live oysters if you happen to pick up a cluster, which is usually the case. I like the welding hammer because of its wedge shape that it has for chipping slag when welding. A wire brush cleans them fairly well.

THERE IS OR WAS A VERY LARGE OYSTER BED JUST PAST SHAMROCK AT A PLACE CALLED THE BELL. ITS A SMALL COVE WITH A LARGE CONCRETE STRUCTURE STICKING OUT OF THE WATER, LOOKED LIKE A BELL. WELL IN THE FLATS JUST BEHIND THAT. WE USED TO FILL UP 2-3 ICE CHEST OF BIG OYSTERS. ITS JUST PAST THE BLUE WATER TOWER BUT BEFORE THE EAST FLATS. THERE IS A DEEP CHANNEL NEXT TO IT WHERE THE SAILBOATS LIKE TO GO IN AND ANCHOR. WE WOULD GO AND STAY THE WHOLE DAY FISHING THERE, THE FISHING IS ALSO VERY GOOD ON THE BAY SIDE.
