I am new to the surf. How far out are the guts? How many are they? How far apart are they from one another?

The "guts" start right at the beach. The area in between sand bars is known as the gut. This water is deeper than that on the bars, which is why it holds the fish.

The gut generally starts right below the rib cage. Depending upon how long it has been maintained will determine if it is a large gut or a small gut. If you have an assembly of beer drinkers there may be a large number of guts. So you have to be observant to determine the number and size of the guts. Also it is normally considered in bad taste to get the guts too close together. Even though you did not inquire about it, I always cast on the downwind side of the gut to prevent getting backlashes in my baitcasting reel. However that is not as big of a concern if you are using a spincast reel. I hope this answered all of your questions.
