Recently I filled my "07 Toyota 4 runner up with fuel at a Citco station. I made it 5 miles before my Toyots just shut down and quit. Got it towed to a Toyota dealer for repairs and they told me the fuel pump was shot. I asked if this was a Toyota problem and they replied that it was bad fuel causing the problem and lots of other makes of cars were having the same problem. They then told me that Valero fuel was causing lots of problems all over South Texas. I wasn't quite sure about what they told me and talked to an independent auto works shop owner and he verified what the Toyota people told me and that he was seeing lots of injector and fuel level senders going out along with fuel pumps. The Toyota dealer and the independent both said that Valero fuel was to blame and both said they had reason to belive that fuel from Exxon, Shell, and Chevron was causing no problems due to the fact that they were adding more additives to overcome the problems caused by the mandate to lower the sulfer content in the fuel. Personaly I have switched filling stations because I go some places that it would be hard to give instruction on how to find me and/or out of range of my cellphone.

I had the same problem with my titan's fuel pump. I was glad it didn't shut down in the middle of the highway. The new flex fuel vehicles should not have that problem. We'll see, as I just bought a new flex fuel Titan. Question

On a side note, anyone with older cars and trucks should be aware that most of the zinc has been removed from motor oil the result is greater wear on cams lifters and valves in older flat tappet engines, most all newer cars have roller cammed motors so they can run on oil with less zinc, the only oil that I found with enough zinc for older motors is the Kendall brand, the only problem is its hard to find Good luck owners of older cars Confused

Had the same problem with my diesel, I have to put additives in it everytime I fill it up. Mileage dropped like a rock. Still down. There are additives you can buy that will take care of this problem. Check with your dealer. GMC went so far as to replace all of my injectors. Helped for a little while and then the problem started again but not as bad. Was gettintg in the 20's but now in the teens. When towing it's much worse. Only thing that hasn't been changed is the chip and I am looking at really hard right now.

This has been a problem with diesel for a couple of years now. Didn't know it affected gas as well. Hmmmmm Wonder if the rice burner I just got will have problems.

Wouldn't put Citgo or Valero gas in my tank even if you paid for it.

This problem started well before gas prices started falling.

Gasoline is bought at wholesale from whoever has the lowest price.. Based on our locality you are either buying Valero, Citgo or Flint Hills gasoline whether you know it or not.
Transport costs for Exxon, Shell or chevron etc. gasoline would cut in to the profit margin for the vendor and make it much less feasible to buy and sell.

2Salty-- What's wrong with Valero gas/diesel? How is their refining process any different from anothers?
They are a Texas based company and are the only refiner that I know of that makes substantial donations to national and local charities.

From my investigation the refining process is not the problem. The problem comes in the amount and/or quality of additives blended with the fuel after the process is complete to compensate for the reduction of sulfur in gasoline and diesel fuel that was mandated by the government. Remember the old addage " You get what you pay for"?

recently I had two of my wreckers in the valley fuel up at the same Valero. Day later and both of them down. both wreckers 2008 model Dodge 3500's. Cost new for cab and chasis around 28,000.00 each. Price to fix them for bad fuel $26,000.00 for one and $26,000.00 for the other. Amazing how bad fuel can total a vehicle. Luckily for us we were able to get samples of the fuel at the valero and the fuel from our tanks. The holding company that owns the valero store stepped up to the plate and cut Chrysler a check for over $50,000.00 for the repairs on the two trucks plus compensated us for the "down" time. So, if you've got a problem with bad fuel-go to the source and demand the take care of the problem. If I had not made the call and got samples right away I would have been stuck with two totalled trucks.

Company I work for has Fleet of Ford vans, we/I use mainly Valero gas (fill up every 2 days) since they are everywhere & convient.
None of us have had any problems like this.

In the original post, Cephus stated that he filled up at a "Citgo" station. I am just wandering how this got to be a Valero bashing post?

My brother told me that Citgo and Valero are the same and it comes from Mexico. He said his service business has not shown any increase in fuel pump or injector problems but many of his clients complain about lower fuel economy, some up to 5 mpg.
