So I usually will grow my tomatoes and peppers from seed to save money, then if anything dies I'll replace it with bought plants. In the case of my peppers, the seeds are usually from my peppers from the year before - my own special line. I'll usually grow mostly bells and japs. This year when I bought a couple 6 packs of replacements I thought I bought poblanos and more japs, but instead I've got these massive plants that are loaded with some kind of small pepper that's probably a 7 out of 10 hot. The plants are every bit of 5ft tall and they produce so much that 99% of them I never pick - plus I don't know what to do with them. It takes forever to pick them and get a significant amount...

Then there is this hybrid squash creation of mine - what do you think is in this guys pedigree? I'm letting that large on go for seed...

On the whole the garden is lagging. The lack of rain here is not helping. I made an attempt to produce some sugar snap peas (they were supposed to be growing on the row of baskets), out of probably 100 pre-germinated seeds I put in the ground 6 may have actually come up and I have yet to see a bean or a blossom for that matter.
Broccli is doing well, I bought some bib lettuce that surprisingly is doing well also. Spinach is still tiny and I didn't get a very good germination from it either. Tomatoes are starting to come along.
Planting the squash was sort of an experiment, because it was supposedly too late, but out of the plants that actually made it, they're producing like crazy. The squash that are mixed in with the broccli came up on their own from the spring seed.

The peppers' fruits' erect form, colors and shape resemble those of an ornamental variety supposedly too hot to eat. The squash looks like a hybrid of winter and summer squashes: acorn and yellow.

You may be able to get more info on the peppers in a book by a local author. Look for "Peppers: The Domesticated Capsicums," by Jean Andrews.

Those do look like ornamental peppers. Not sure on the squash - looks like a yellow mixed with something else. Did you have any other varieties planted?

My guess says IMS is correct with a butternut - yellow straight neck cross. I'm gonna work with this one and see what I can make of it. I fried some up last night and the flavor of it is sweet like the butternut and the texture is soft when cooked like the yellow. Maybe I should cross it with the zucchini - yellow straight neck cross that came up to give it some size (to the plant)...

Regarding the pepper - I agree it looks ornamental, it could definitely pass for a giant ornamental pepper in somebody's flower garden - it's pointless in mine. Maybe I should cross it with a jap and see if I can produce a jap tree

This is the first year I used Preen - a pre-emergent herbicide to control the crabgrass and other weeds - I didn't treat the far left and you can really tell the difference. That's nut grass in the back and nothing really controls it. However I hit with some Remedy over a week ago and it's starting to turn yellow.

Super Chilis grow with the same upright pepper habit too, although I have never seen a plant that large, but hey, good soil and/or fertilizer can make any pepper plant huge. Last season my Poblano, Serrano and Cayenne plants were taller than me and I'm 5'10"!!! Shocked

I PLANTED MY 8-BALL ZUCHINNI ON AUG25. AND HAD A TREMENDOUS HARVEST. THEY ONLY TAKE 45 DAYS. MY TUSCAN CANTALOPES ARE COVERED WITH CANTALOPES BUT NO FERTILIZER KEEPS THEM SMALL. MAY START USING FERTILIZER.
