Gulf fishers back illegal fishing crackdown

Gulf of Carpentaria fishermen in far north Queensland have welcomed tougher penalties being proposed by the Federal Government to reduce illegal fishing.

The new legislation includes fines of more than $800,000 and prison terms of up to three years.

The chairman of the Gulf Fisherman's Association, Gary Ward, says the recent sighting of two more illegal boats proves the new measures cannot come soon enough.

"It's pointless in fining them money because they have no money," he said.

"They only have a pair of shorts and a shirt, that's all they've got to their name, but the three years jail may be a deterrent - anything we can do to deter these people from continuing down here is really good," he said.

Folks,

Look at the fines verses ours. We have some work to do.
