I have fished 23 out of the 24 Surfcats and have had one 1st, 2 X 3rds, 2 X 4ths and a 5th. I am going to have a hard time entering next year because of a few major issues:
The first being it is no longer held at Big Shell

It is not a catch and release tournament

The prize money is the same as when it started($500). I spent over $1000 in tackle, Beer, ice, Gas, Fees and getting the truck ready. Best case I loose $500. The Thong pays 7 K and 10 K for a 10 foot shark

This year a Surfcat bought a Bull Red from a fisherman on the south Jetty for $33 (a dollar per pound) and have talked to several witnesses. I came in 4th and sucks being me.

I have heard stories about people not fishing at Big Shell, fishing offshore and pre-fishing.

I have been pushed out of contention by a Surfcat entering two Bull reds and only one Tag??????

Sharks over the 6ft maximum length being weighed how can a 6ft Black Tip weigh over 130#???

The bad perception from locals is reinforced by the posts on this web site and the actions of a few bad actors leaving trash.

I understand the culture of the tournament and would hate to see it disappear like the Big Sharks from the 60's. Joey needs to overhaul the tournament, starting with catch and release.

The North Jetty is where we chose to fish the Surfcats because of the wind, Park fee not paid and the change in the fishing regulations for Tarpon & Black Drum. fishing is fair with Red fish, Flounder, Snook, Spanish, Tarpon, small Black tips & Mangrove Snapper. No Trout. Lots of trash in the surf with clear water.

Thanks for the input.....

Also, How about upping the money too.

600 anglers times $45 = $27,000

Prizes are $500 1st, $200 2nd, $100 3rd for Sport and open division.
$1600 cash plus some rods and reels. Maybe $3000 in door prizes.

Where is the other $20,000 going?

Nice to hear from a long time SurfCat participant that has a great understanding on what needs to be changed.

Its kind of like finally recognizing your girl has been sheboyganing someone else for the last 15 years and all along someone for the last 5 years has been trying to tell you so. It takes you seeing it for yourself to beleive it. Welcome to Sharkathon Hogg. Time to kick surfcats to the curb. Laughing
