Today upon leaving my street me and the wife saw what looked like a grackle flying through the air except for the white feathers on its neck or back area . I looked through my north america bird book and the only bird that even comes remotly close would be a very young frigate bird but I know it wasn't. Maybe a bird from Mexico, I do not know. I figure since my wife saw it I know it wasn't the effects from last nights jello shots. Any ideas?

Had to have been the jello shots. Dream? Maybe.

I couldn't get the link to work....check out a Caracara (Mexican Eagle)
I've seen a few around here lately.

I think that one is call the white feathered, pink, big ear jello-shot bird.
Know to nest around Lola Johnson Road in October. Very Happy

it was the size of a grackle i was also thinking a possible young mexican eagle. I will check the web. Ok I checked out the mexican eagle, nope. Wife agrees on that. Maybe an escaped caged bird. Still searching.

Maybe you should go with the 'genetic freak' explanation - I've got a couple degrees in poultry science and it's not unusual for black to show up in a typical white broiler - probably happens less than .01% of the time, but when you see millions, it comes up. There are plenty of grackles flying around...

IMS, some dillhole may have let a Magpie off the hook....out of the cage. They are black and white and kinda grackle sized....................................... not to be confused with the often sighted Double Breasted Mattress Thrasher!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

ok ....i found it. Hard to believe maybe for some. But i'm 99% sure the bird is the black-billed magpie. The tail and the white on the back is a dead giveaway. However we did not see its belly. Its a north american bird, for some reason a little far south. cool.

I thought it might be a Magpie when I first read you post. There aren't many birds around North America that are just black and white................. AND relatively small. Wink

That must have been a site to see. Glad you confirmed the identity. As far as the caracara goes, when i move to Del Rio 14 years ago, they were rarely seen. Know they are as common as vultures. The only rare bird I saw my last few years there was a yellow headed grackle. I always thought that grackles we only good for target practice. These things (the yellow headed) are nothing but beautiful. God I wish I had gotten it mounted. Just kidding. They are a site to behold. I would rate them right up there with the painted bunting or oriale.

I was born in the second house from the corner on Granada where it meets West Longview, across from the old park. Back when all of the huge old mesquites were still there I saw lots of American Redstarts and Hooded Warblers. A kid brought a live Scarlet Tanager to school when I was in the sixth grade, the only one that I've ever seen.

I've seen my share of Caracaras on the drive from Corpus to San Marcos too.

We got the matress thrasher down, no confusing that one with another variety. Magpies are a little tougher to spot. Very Happy
