I packed my truck on Thursday hoping we could leave Friday afternoon and head out to PINS. My wife could not get out of work early and we changed our plans to travel Saturday at 4:00AM. I did not get any sleep and felt like a little kid before X-Mas morning, all I could think about were Reds, Specks and even the Smacks if they were there. We woke up early but my wife and kids could not get in gear and we ended up leaving the house at 5:30 am. It's a 3 hour drive from Laredo and then the kids wanted to stop for breakfast. After a drive-by at McDonald's, in Alice, we headed to Pins with only one more stop planned, gas. When we made it to Corpus, I notice the lid to one of our ice chests had blown off. I clearly remember securing the lid and I've driven with it in the back before. I now had to stop and get another ice chest. I stop, buy the ice chest and continue to the gas station. Finally at the last gas station before PINS, I am filling up when I look at my watch, IT’S PASSED 9 AM.
Well better late than never. Tired, No sleep and yet wide awake, and excited about making my first cast of the trip; we leave the black-top about 9:30. Where did I loose, two great hours
I remember hearing the beach was drivable but to be careful with the debris so I follow the tracks and evade refrigerators, washing machines, all kinds of debris until about the 20mm where I passed up Charlie and Chris Golla and friends at about the twenty. I waved at them and continued on my way, with the family and dog. I then see this old doorframe with nails sticking out of it in the middle of the path around the 22, get lazy and try to drive around it and next to the beach.....ON THE QUICKSAND/SHELL STUFF. Well, you probably guessed it; the truck immediately sinks about 7 inches into the loose sand and shell mix. My truck is stuck, I hit 4L and nothing, wow; my truck was not doing anything but digging. I've been in this situation before, and a shovel usually gets you out but something else was wrong, the truck started to overheat . It’s an old truck and I was worried. My wife, son and I started to use the shovels again and then notice the Gollas passing by I was caught completely without words when Charlie tells Chris to back up as they come forward and give me a hand, pulling my truck out. Thank you both so much.... I am really in your debt!!!!
It's been ten years since I last got stuck out at PINS, and it happened because I was not paying attention, just like Ol Sanch said. I also remember thinking while I read his post, Thank God that does not happen to me anymore. Well it did and fortunately for me, The Gollas were there to get me out of a bind or hole.
All was not lost, I stayed in that same spot after being rescued, waiting for my truck to cool down and started to fish. The mullet were easy to come by, the reds were responding and my son and I both had our limits before noon. I tried out for specks but I guess I stopped in a Red fish hole and not a speck hole cause that's all I was catching.... Oh and about ten skippies for every red. We camped out there Saturday and fished till about 2:00 pm on Sunday before heading back.
The highlight of the trip was when my ten year old daughter along with a little envy that her big brother had caught fish and she had not, gets my pole and casts out a mullet to about the first sand bar. She had been hooking skippies but not able to bring any in, and started to look frustrated when she yells at me,” Dad, I caught something and I can’t bring it in.” I laughed and told her, you hooked it, you bring it in now. I continued with what I was doing when my son yells at me, Dad, the fish is taking all her line. That caught my interest and went out to see what was going on. She had the pole buried in her tummy trying to hold what I thought was a huge bull red. She notices that she is running out of line and starts to run with the fish when he pulls to the sides so it won’t take more line and then she started to reel in when he changed directions. I wish I had had a video camera to record this stuff. She was fighting that fish like a PRO; then again, what’s a proud father to say. The fight went on for about a good twenty minutes and I could tell she was just as tired as the fish was. She did not have any more strength in her arms to continue and her brother offered to take over. I said no. Her fish, she brings it in or it breaks the line. I then told her to walk away from the beach to bring the fish in closer without using her arms as much and then walk toward the beach reeling in the slack. She did and after a few back and forths she started gaining her line back. We finally saw the fish over the first sand bar and it was not red, it was blue. What did she have? She reeled in some more, foaught for another five to minutes and finally beached in a huge jack. Wow, she caught a huge Jack on a light tackle. Now she asked, Daddy, will you mount it on your trophy room? $$$$$ !!!
Photos are coming this afternoon. My kids camera and they went to school. |
