We arrived on PINS to find driving conditions good, but bumpy. Drove down to the beginning of Little Shell and set-up camp for the day between two perfect points that exteeded through the wade gut into the first gut. Between the wade gut was wiast deep and deeper for me ( about three to four foot of water). Schools of mullet everywhere between 4 and 8 inches in length with some pony mullet jumping in the second gut.
Water was gin clear, with moderate weed in the wade gut and on top of the first bar, and completly weed free beyond the front half of the first bar.
Upon wading out to set the first baits, I noticed a ton of pomps from 2 to 6" in the wade gut, a few specks hanging around the grass line, and saw a 6 foot plus tarpon swimming the far side of the second gut working pony mullet.
I though to myself, "Its gonna be on today!"
WRONG!
Every lure I threw, on almost every cast resulted in a whiting!
I had 6 inch whiting hitting a fast retrieved 3/4 oz silver spoon. They tore up my jigs, and even where hitting my topwaters.
None large enough to keep though. Couldn't get any popms either because of how thick the whiting were.
Finally, the whiting bite dies off a little. I walk out and sight cast a couple reds, and a few specks. No takers though. They just seemed to be drifitng by slowly with the current, full on mullet I presume, which was still everywhere. Tried freelining mullet, nothing, freelined whiting, nothing, cut mullet and whiting, nothing, fishbites and shrimp, nothing. Had one really big jack following my silver spoon, right up to me, wouldn't touch it. Once I saw him, I even stopped it a couple times and gave slow twitches to try to entice him, and he just followed it and watched it.
While out there, I watched countless reds swim right past my baits and not even investigate them.
All the specks and reds I saw just plain ignored the baitfish too. Very strange.
Finally about 3:30pm, managed this little bonnethead from the first gut on fishbites:
Not too long after that, Tiffany and the baby had both had enough heat, so we packed it in for the day.
After getting back to Tiff's parents house, and unpacking, I noticed it was a full-moon phase!
With the full moon, the bite must be an evening one, as I was packing up I noticed the birds lining up along both points as they became more exposed with the water heading out. Another huge clue that the evening bite is on. Should have waited to go out until 3 or 4, then fished up to dusk. Should have looked at where the moon phase was.
Saw Nick cruising out as we were heading back in, another huge clue that it is an evening bite right now!
But the conditions could not have been better though, and was still alot of fun to be out for the day with the family on the beach. _________________ GOBZA!!!

| Thanks for the report John, Wish i could of been there as im sure the weather and water was perfect. The only fishing i was able to do was with my girlfriend yesterday. She had been bugging me to go catch crawfish. well after a week of hearing it we decided to leave the kids and just get out and spend the day together at a park about 40 minutes from town. We ended up catching over 100 crawfish together between the both of us and they in turn were boiled up when we got home........boy was that a good snack!!. Hopefully i will be down there this weekend and hopefully i will get to go deep sea for the 1st time ever. |
