Sky-high expertise
But NASA's top engineers help area inventors
By Fanny S. Chirinos Caller-Times
June 11, 2006
Several area businesses reached for the stars and found the help they needed from NASA engineers.
This normally sky-high expertise came free of charge through a volunteer program. The engineers are employees of more than 50 aerospace companies, including Boeing and Lockheed Martin, contracted with NASA. Volunteers donate more than 14,000 combined hours to the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program, which helps small businesses with technical challenges. The program is funded by NASA and has centers in Texas, New York, New Mexico and Florida.
Cesar White, owner of Mosca Boats in Corpus Christi, just wanted a boat that wouldn't end up costing a small fortune. He wanted options, a compact design and a quiet hull. His problem was finding cost-efficient materials that would bond fiberglass shells to the hull. Enter Ed Marin, engineer and programs manager at Composite Factory Inc.
