What an awesome fish. Back in the 80's, while fishing the Port A north jetties with a few friends, Mike Gibbs landed a 13' 1 1/2" hammerhead. It was a pretty awesome night in itself.

I fish Florida often and have friends in the Charlotte Harbor area. They say it's common to have the big hammers and bulls tear 200 lb tarpon in half at the boat. They were telling me of a hammer they call hitler that is so big that catching him is impossible. They swear he's over 18'. His dorsal sticks out of the water over 4'. I never saw him. I think I would be a little intimidated.

Back in the 60's when I was a kid, a big hammer would steal a Redfish now and again out on the end of the Port "A" jetty... I think the old times called it "Leader Mouth" because of the leaders you could see hanging of his mouth... Biggest fish I ever saw...

My uncle, Charles "Mike" Mudd and buddy Fred Wright caught this hammer 7 miles east of the Port A jetties on the carbody reef in '76. It was 13'7" and I believe it was 873#'s

I got to see leader mouth up close one day at the north jetty. Biggest fish I've ever seen. Scared me and I was up on the rocks. Some old time surfers that went to St. Joe will have stories about him.

A number of people have talked about a hammerhead that is said to be 20 foot long - they call it whiskers because of all the leaders and cable hanging out of its jaw. My brother had the fish go under his boat years ago and according to him, it lapped his 19 foot boat by about a foot on each side. I dont remember where it happened - but I will call him and find out.
