|
|
Coming down from IH37 straight down to PINS and I need to stop and fill up ice chests with ICE - bag and block. Where is the easiest place to pick it up (it does not need to be the cheapest but I do have my cull line)....
It is my understanding that if you bury an ice chest and keep the ground soaked around it down on the beach, block ice will do well for up to a week.... is this true ? 7 days of margaritas on the sand without a trip back up the beach ? |

wet sand is darker and actually will absorb the heat. Dry sandd reflects most of it. That is why when you are hopping through hot sand you can stop and work your feet in a bit to get some relief before taking a few more steps.
to keep the ice cold, it needs to be a good cooler too. Don't skimp. Best block ice is made by freezing gallon jugs of water at home. Leave a little space in the top and the lids off to account for expansion.
As for buying block ice, I can't help you much there. HEB has block dry ice though at the bakery normally. Quiet expensive, but will stay cold for a long, long time! _________________ GOBZA!!!

In the Bluff on Waldren close to McDonalds and on the island behind the stripes in the Coastal Offshore parking lot there are ice machines. For a 1.25 you get either 24lbs of ice you can fill your ice chest with or 20lbs if bagged. Hope this helps.

I call it the magic ice machine a good deal for 1.25 . Keep at least 1 cooler dedicated for ice an such, one that you will not be opening and closing. Its the opening and closing that lets the cool out and the heat and humidity in causing you ice to work harder to keep things cooler just like the fridge. A layer of plastic and then a layer of news paper over the ice close the lid, paper is a great insulator. Its about all you can do besides keeping the coolers out of the sunlight. Have fun and keep cool. As john said gallon jugs make good ice. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| Exxon at the corner of Waldron and SPID in the Bluff. Easy stop. Both bag and block at a good price. |

True block ice is a thing of the past around SA, not sure about CC. Following the tips above are tried and true. Another tip is to put a layer of dry ice on top of the block ice. The CO2 evaporates eventually but keep the heat off your block ice. Should get you a couple of extra days.

I agree. Keep an icechest dedicated to just ice and keep it out of the sun and closed. I carry 120 qt filled with bags of ice and frozen pop bottles. The dry ice thing works well but can damage your ice chest. Use newspaper to protect the icechest liner if you use dry ice. I like dry ice as well. I put two blocks of dry ice on top of 12 -14 bags of ice. Use a layer of newspaper to your ice chest and hands. Use gloves when handling the dry ice.
I have kept things cold for 3=4 days max in our heat. If I'm the only one using it longer. I say a party of 4 or more adults needs 200 plus pounds of ice for a stay of 5 days. Pack all food and drinks with as much ice as possible. keep meat separate from drinks to preserve meat longer. _________________ Paul S Perez

| It helps a lot if you pre-cool and freeze what foods you can. Don't show up in Corpus, buy a bunch of food and drinks, and stick it all in coolers and expect to keep it that way for a while. You will lose most of your ice to cooling it down, not keeping it cool. We always buy our food and drinks a couple of days in advance, freeze what we can and place all of our drinks in a cold fridge. This makes a huge difference. We also do the seperate cooler things as well. Drinks are where most will be headed for, so we have a seperate one just of for those. We used to have to leave the beach just for ice, but not anymore. |

I'll chime in also. If you tape a GOOD ice chest all around the seal so that no air can get in or out that chest will be good for several days. But the most important thing is do not open it until you absolutly need it. Every time you open that chest the exchange of air does a number on the ice. Of course there are obvious things like always keep it in the shade. An extra chest filled with block ice and a 5 lb piece of dry ice on top has lasted me for quite a few days. Again, only if you don't open it until you have run out of ice in your other chests. _________________ Big Ed

I agree with Mudflap, chill/freeze as much as you can. One thing I do for our food box is freeze bottles of drinking water. In a 120 qt box, half will be filled with frozen bottles of water. Then I put chilled or frozen food in. Two important things happen; 1) the frozen bottles will stay mostly frozen the whole trip, thus preserving the food and 2) there is no accumulation of water in the bottom so nothing gets soaked if it drops to the bottom (like that big ol T-Bone I plan to grill).
I actually freeze most water bottles that I haul and put them in the drink box (we always have a dedicated drink box to keep from opening and closing the food & ice boxes). When I pull one out to drink it is partially thawd so I drink the all the liquid then refill the bottle from a 5 gallon cooler. That way I get lots of cold water from one frozen bottle. Also works to add you favorite non-water beverage as well -- you choose.

If you have a fridge in you garage with a freezer you can pull the racks and ice maker out. then you can fit three office type trash cans with water ( do not fill all the way at first) _________________ Fin in the wind |
